ok so im new to the ej's but not subys, i'm haveing a problem getting tbc for number one. i don't have a compersion tester to do it right, so im useing a flash light and the timing marks on the timing belt covers and the notch on the crank pulley, my haynes manule say line the mark on 0, i do that and the piston isn't all the way to the top and if i turn it over a little more i can see the piston come up more and the crankpulley mark it at about 5oclock when it should be more like 1oclock, what gives?

Have you removed the crank pulley? Can you see the timing belt sprocket on the crank shaft? The mark you should is on the rear flange of the t-belt sprocket.

You really don't need to find TDC.
This is where the EJ's are easier IMO. The belts have marks on them.
Line up the marks on the crank and cam sprockets to the marks on the timing belt and you're golden. You don't need to worry about ANYTHING else. The ignition is all electric, so you needn't worry about adjusting ignition timing or anything else. Just as long as those marks line up, you're good.
