Help!! Intermittent engine problems

I was at an auto-x yesterday and on my sixth run my engine lost power and let out a huge amount of smoke :( . I assumed It was blown so I coasted off course and started checking it out. It was smoking quite a bit at idle and more when I revved it up. I parked it and came back when the auto-x was done. I started it back up and drove it around and found it had all its power back and it was acting just like my old 2.2 with shot rings. Lots of smoke under acceleration and very little at idle. I proceeded to drive it home and halfway it just quit smoking and I couldn't find anything wrong with it :? . From what I can tell it burned about a quarter quart of oil.

While it was doing it I was thinking it could be a ring or head gasket but I don't think either of those could just go away like that.

I have since ran it all the way to redline several times and not a hint of smoke.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be? My trust in this engine being reliable just went out the window. :? :? :?

For those of you that don't know this is an EJ25 out of an 03 Legacy running off the 2.2 ecu.

You may have injested oil through the PCV system, or something like that....

That thought had crossed my mind, but isn't the pcv on top of the block?

Anyway I went to another auto-x this weekend and put in 28 runs, over two days, and not a single issue. It saw the rev limiter on every run and far more extreme cornering and transitions than 2 weeks ago. If anything I would have expected to reproduce the problem with all that. Oh well, now I just have to hope it doesn't show up again.

Thanks for the response.
