EJ20G Versus EJ22T (stock USA BC-BF engine)

I own a 92 5-speed sedan with a few mods and 135k miles on the original
engine. I also own a complete EJ20G (2000cc quad cam turbo engine used
outside the US) and another EJ20G with collision damage to one head and
camshaft. Even though I have a fresh EJ20G sitting on the shelf ready
to drop in. (I have a cherry picker and big heated garage), I have not
bothered to swap engines. In Spokane County,Washington State, I have to
go through an emissions inspection every couple of years and an EJ20G
aint legal in the US. It's a lot easier to hide a bunch of mods on an
EJ22T than it is to hide an entire engine with non-approved serial
numbers. Although the EJ20G is a peppier engine, the main obstacles to
more power in our Legacies are in the ECU and external plumbing, lack of
iintercooler etc. I don't know how much power I have with my EJ22T stock
engine, but it is sufficient that doing an engine swap before it is
thoroughly worn out does not seem like a practical option. As I see it,
the "Holy Grail" is creating a "poor man's" 22B engine with some hybrid
of the EJ22T and solid lifter quad cam heads such as those found on the
98 2.5 RS engine. In case you didn't know, the quad cam EJ20G has
hydraulic valve lash adjusters, just like the twin cam (one per side)
EJ22T and those devices, while wonderfully quiet and reliable are a
limiting factor in achieving high revs. Unless you have ambitions for
achieving 8000 rpms, a stock EJ22T engine is not a bad choice.
(No, I do not want to sell either of my EJ20G engines)

Uniden Bear Tracker mobile scanner for locating the local constabulary
