Hi,
sorry if this post is faux pas, I am desperate and on a dreaded dial up system in nowhere land...can't search much...
My dad recently passed down his Legacy '94 2.2 [automatic] to me after I painted his house. I drove it 1600 km just fine, got on the ferry to the very wet, damp, windy, salty, and end of the tank gas station island of my home.
It was great on fuel [aside from his warning that there was a hole in the gas tank and I could only put about 35 liters in at a time. I commuted for a couple of weeks...then...almost ran out of gas...then...
dreaded hesitation of sorts. poor starting, and searching for the sweet spot to get it going...once i got past the minute of less then 10km/hr starting [dangerous indeed crossing the highway from my driveway] it would take off, and guzzle fuel.
my backyard mechanic buddy did the spark plugs [napa only sold bosch tho] and after pouring out black liquid from the fuel filter...replaced that too. he also looked at my air filter and forgot to put the screws back in so it's not that tight anymore.
things got worse...the sweet spot search was pretty embarassing driving away from the jobsite on a slight incline...was stuck on the hill...not making any progress until it finally took and so I blew the stop sign [good thing we have understanding people and no traffic lights].
car is since parked. i start it every so often and it is getting worse every time.
dad put a bandaid over the incessantly blinking engine light, said it was a conspiracy to get seventy bucks out of him every so kilometers.
so, just tonight, i went out and started it. barely, was quite rough. when it goes, if i touch the accelerator, the rpms go down and a growling comes from the air filter area. i waited a minute [idle around 1000], then touched the pedal...same thing again, but when i let go, there was a pause and then the rpms went up [200 more or so] then fluctuated for a minute. i played the pedal again, on the upswing of its fluctuation and got the rpms to 2500 and held it. then i noticed the engine light blinking in long and shorts...if i learned anything [is possible] the blinking might translate to a 52, 51, 33, 22...then after a couple of minutes holding the higher rpm it dropped quick and nearly stalled itself.
maybe this might be interesting to someone? it's very frustrating to me, and mechanical help here is next to nil for computer related issues. things without distributors and carbs are usually taken off island for maintenance and repairs.
are there any wires i can find and wiggle? things to bypass?
oh yeah, and when we took out the old plugs, the gaps were huge!!!
obviously, i'm no mechanic...but i'm not afraid, and forced right now to be a bit of a self reliant woman. it worked fine...then went on rapid decline.
got the two stroke rode bike going, so i can get around, but the hurricane force winds set in last night, a wagon would sure be dandy.
it's got nearly 360K...
anyway, i've managed to search this site some for useful info...sorry if this stuff is redundant...but would like some personal assistance if possible.
cheers
