legacycentral bbs

I only found 4 screws holding the bezel around the cluster and it did not want to come off.
I pried a little by the climate control and broke part of the bezel
I'd like to replace this cluster without breaking anything more.
can somebody PLEASE help?

I think you gotta get in and take the bezel off the cupholder, too. Also, find your rear defrost switch and pull that thing out, there's a screw back there, too. That's about all I can recall off the top of my head right now. . .

defrost switch has one behind it too??
I got the 2 screws by the cup holder (already did the radio a couple of times)
and the 2 above the cluster. didn't know about the one by the defrost switch.

Are you looking to take off the dash or just the gauge cluster? Or are you trying to take the hvac controls out?

just the cluster, which requires the removal of the bezel.

well I finally got the bezel off.
behind the power mirror switch was another screw as well as behind the block off plate on the right of the wheel

I circled all the screw locations in red
now I need to swap my cluster out.

I just took a pic from ebay and added the circles and trimmed some excess from it.

one foot note, to get the bezel out you will NEED to drop your steering wheel all the way down and put your left turn signal on as well as the wipers on high.

Hehe, I'm just visualizing a Legacy in a parking light with its left blinker flashing and the wipers madly wiping as the dude in the driver's seat tries to wrestle out the dash bezel.

just as an update.
the replacement cluster is in, and after replacing most of its bulbs (good thing I did it at night and saw all the bulbs out) I can now see how fast I am going.
though the car feels slower now. my old one read fast all the time
now I need to put back on the bezel and find some of those little bulbs for the switches.

I've pulled the dash panel without dropping the column, but it would make it easier. If I'd seen this thread I'd have posted the screw loctaions. Sorry.

you didn't lower the steering wheel?

nope... then again. they said you had to drop the column on my Astro van and Dodge truck too, but I didn't.... , I'm just that stubborn

I'm not talking the column, just the steering wheel. I have tilt and I just set it to the lowest setting to get it out.
much better than fighting with it.

I suggest removing the stearing wheel and the plastic trim around the stearing column. It makes the job far easier and you dont need a puller to do it.

pulling an airbag wheel is rarely a safe option. besides once the wheel is dropped and the levers are down it's 10 minutes tops to get the bezel out.

I needed a puller for my 91 non-airbag wheel. From removing a lot of Subaru steering wheels I've found it's a crapshoot. Sometimes you do, and sometimes you don't. Only ones that come right off are Justy wheels and EA81 wheels.

I'd have to say taking off the wheel is too much extra work. It's a little tricky but not all that bad.

I have NEVER needed a puller on any Subie. Once I take my high heels off the wheel usually comes right off.

this thread would have come in handy to me a half hour ago whilst trying to yank mine out.

have fun putting the cluster back in, hooking up the speedo is a bitch, i had to lay with my head by the gas pedal, shove a hand up through there and have my other hand on the cluster. i might as well have been blind for it. ahahahah

Ya the speedocable is the funnest part! Really feels good when you get it in though.
