So anybody following my overheating thread knows that I killed the drivers side HG. The other side seems to be fine, I'll do a comp. test but the plugs look to be dry as a bone and in good shape.

So I only want to replace the one headgasket, if ain't broke - don't fix it type thing. In reading around I got the feeling that there are different thickness HG for the 22T, is this correct? If so, how much does a HG compress down, percentage or thousandth's, so that I can measure the good side and get the appropriate new gasket. I would like to avoid having uneven compression ratios.

Does anybody see any other problems with doing just one HG?

The Ej22T HG is the same thickness as the Ej22E HG if we are talking about our 90-94 cars. It's the laters ones for the ej22 cars that got thinner.

You can do just one head gasket, but why? I personally would pull the engine to do the HG. Once it's out, I would do the head gaskets (pl) water pump and possibly oil pump. I would also closely inspect all idler pullies and replace any that hang up at all.

You can do it with the engine in the car, and I am sure that several people will chime in and tell you how they do it that way. To each their own. I don't care about being right. I am just telling you what works best for me...

I agree that it would be best to pull it and do a 'rebuild' on all the pumps and idlers and such. But right now I simply don't have the facilities and time to do this . The engine also only has 125k on it so I'm hoping all is well. I will be checking all the idler pulleys and such, and if need be will replace them.

I will getting a new shortblock down the road to do a full rebuild on and will address those issues then.

I'd say do the best thing that you can with your time/money/facilities...
