Steering gets tuffer and tuffer.
In the beginning I thought it was my imagination, but my steering definatly gets harder to turn the more I drive it It, there are no funny noises or anything so what an earth could cause this?

Steering gets tuffer and tuffer.
How long ago was the fluid changed last? Since ATF is basically a
hydraulic fluid, I'm guessing over time that dirt and moisture hamper
it's ability to build pressure. Before my steering rack failed, the
steering began to get stiffer. I changed the fluid and put in
synthetic ATF, and the steering felt MUCH better for almost a year,
but unfortunately the damage was already done to the rack and it
needed replaced, but new fluid does wonders and is often overlooked.
A good habit to get into with power steering fluid is drain and
replace 100 percent of it from the rack itself, then at every oil
change there after, suck out the steering fluid from the resivoir and
replace it with new. This keeps practically new fluid in the steering
system at all times. Since the entire system holds less then a quart,
you won't go broke changing it at every oil change.

mmmm yes good idea........... but ( there always a but)
at the moment my wheel alighnment is like eddy monster ( crosseyed as a muel ) because I have a worn trackrod arm that moves about 4 mm, but why would this change the stiffness the longer I drive it from cold ?

Steering gets tuffer and tuffer.
John,
You have answered your own question... fix your track rod and steering allignment! Your cold to hot variation, is probably due to the steering pump fluid loosing viscosity as it heats... or if your problem is very severe, maybe the tires getting better adhesion as they heat.
Fix it... most stock suspension Legacy's chew the edges off their tyre as it is.
