Hi John (again...)

I'd guess your car is 'bout the same as mine... here it's just
called "200 Turbo"... my guess is therefore that you should have
200HP (stock).
However, I recommened that you dyno-test it, cause the garage where
all modifications were made to my car ( www.stmotors.fi ), they told
me that the actual power output varies a lot amongst Subarus. For
example, my previous car was also a 200 Turbo, '92 model, chip
upgraded, and when we drove it on their dyno, it only had 216HP... no
other mods were made on that car, but anyway... They've had some
(stock) turbo Legacies there with under 200HP when tested.
Another thing, you say you run it on 11 psi boost, if I've converted
that correctly, it's 'bout 0.75 bar (correct me if I'm wrong!), and
that sounds a bit low. Is that 11psi on fourth or fifth gear, going
up a hill with your foot half an inch thru the floor... Don't get me
wrong, that's how I measure the top boost on my car. Anyway, under
those circumstances I have 'bout 18psi boost (again, calculating it
from 1.25bar).

I could of course be VERY wrong here... maybe this is the moment to
ask someone how psi is converted to bar, and vice versa!

14.7 PSI = 100kPa = 1 Bar.
As you indicated, 11 PSI is 0.75 Bar.

11 to 12lb is about right for a stock EJ20 220hp... if you have no other
wastegate atuator delaying mods, you have a chip which is probably raising
the MAP sensor input sensing to "fool" the engine management system.

Mind you... running 18lb on a stock MAP sensor must be getting close to
"flat-lining" the sensor output. If you have no other boost control or
engine strengthening, you are asking for trouble runniing 18lb.

The name of the game is to build boost early... not raise the peak boost as
such.

I fully agree, I'm a bit worried with a boost that high. I already
had problems with the boost regulator, had to "fool" the boost
solenoid by attaching a vacuum line "T" and a piece of extra hose in
one of the hoses that goes to the solenoid. Then we put a 0,6mm
nozzle (or whatever the english name for it is) on the extra hose so
now the solenoid "thinks" the boost is 'bout 0.15bar less than it
really is. The bigger nozzle (or whatever...), the more I fool the
solenoid. Sounds like a crazy thing to do, but the guys at Prodrive
in the U.K. thought that it would do the same as a piece of software
that they sell (GBP200), although they had never trie it... Anyway,
it works, so now then boost cut defender doesn't bother anymore, but
still of course, the problem is there, too much boost.
BTW, when John C said that he runs on 11PSI boost, I guess that
doesn't mean top boost, how/when do you measure the "normal" boost,
is it when running with steady throttle, and not "everything she's
got"?

Hey "build boost early" you say....now that sounds usefull, so how does one achieve this because my car is less of a LEgacy and more of a LAGacy.

Regulate!

My car has noticeably less lag with the AVC-R than with the Hallman.
If i had a less restrictive intake and better exhaust it would be
even nicer, but for the time being, i'm totally satisfied with it.

Interesting....anyhoow you never did tell me where you live so I can find out how much postage will cost, I still think your VD0 gauge is the tastiest I've seen, it makes mine look like part of a childs toy

My car has noticeably less lag with the AVC-R than with the Hallman.
If i had a less restrictive intake and better exhaust it would be
even nicer, but for the time being, i'm totally satisfied with it.

anyhoo if I had lets say 14 psi (0.96 bar) instead of my now 11psi what size bleed valve would I need in the boost solenoid? by the way what happens when the boost cutter does cut in....does it stop fuel, or spark?

I fully agree, I'm a bit worried with a boost that high. I already
had problems with the boost regulator, had to "fool" the boost
solenoid by attaching a vacuum line "T" and a piece of extra hose in
one of the hoses that goes to the solenoid. Then we put a 0,6mm
nozzle (or whatever the english name for it is) on the extra hose so
now the solenoid "thinks" the boost is 'bout 0.15bar less than it
really is. The bigger nozzle (or whatever...), the more I fool the
solenoid. Sounds like a crazy thing to do, but the guys at Prodrive
in the U.K. thought that it would do the same as a piece of software
that they sell (GBP200), although they had never trie it... Anyway,
it works, so now then boost cut defender doesn't bother anymore, but
still of course, the problem is there, too much boost.
BTW, when John C said that he runs on 11PSI boost, I guess that
doesn't mean top boost, how/when do you measure the "normal" boost,
is it when running with steady throttle, and not "everything she's
got"?

Motorsports. They have the -30-0-30PSI gauge that's better than mine
for $45US.

Give them a call and see what they can do.

SummitRacing.com has the AutoMeter 2204 gauge pod to house the gauge
in and secure it. It's $12.95US.

Yup thats with my foot .5 inch through the floor in 4th gear, on the other hand if I keep my eyes on the gauge; which is quite hard when flooring it in first/second gear ( my mate usually steers while I peek at the gauge) it zooms up too 11psi then suddenly drops as the engine sucks it all in then sits at about 8 psi as I slap it up through the gears; mind you I still have the gauge attached to the turbi nipple.

I reckon if I tried 18 psi my motor would start spitting it's pistons out the exhaust.

Be nice to try it.... just once though.....maybe twice

me that the actual power output varies a lot amongst Subarus. For
example, my previous car was also a 200 Turbo, '92 model, chip
upgraded, and when we drove it on their dyno, it only had 216HP... no
other mods were made on that car, but anyway... They've had some
(stock) turbo Legacies there with under 200HP when tested.
Another thing, you say you run it on 11 psi boost, if I've converted
that correctly, it's 'bout 0.75 bar (correct me if I'm wrong!), and
that sounds a bit low. Is that 11psi on fourth or fifth gear, going
up a hill with your foot half an inch thru the floor... Don't get me
wrong, that's how I measure the top boost on my car. Anyway, under
those circumstances I have 'bout 18psi boost (again, calculating it
from 1.25bar).

I could of course be VERY wrong here... maybe this is the moment to
ask someone how psi is converted to bar, and vice versa!

I would only be worried if you consistently have 18lb at most throttle
positions... I wouldn't worry if it is only peaking intermittently when you
are driving hard.

Yes, your "T" bleed valve is delaying the wastegate action to compensate for
the chip upgrade. This style of modifications to the various closed loop
controls of engine management system, become more difficult to balance as
more performance modifications are done, and hence the trend to use
electronic boost controllers and replace the entire ECU.

John, theory in a nutshell... the turbo makes heat, intercoolers expel heat, compression ratios raise heat, and fuel quantity expels heat

Practical mods in oder of priority...

- bigger exhaust to increase heat differential pressure across the turbo turbine
- less restrictive intake to reduce turbo intake vaccuum
- cold box intake and more efficient intercooler to increase intake charge density

...then mods to control loops of engine management system

Then the sky and your wallet is the limit.

the MAP sensor input sensing to "fool" the engine management system.

Mind you... running 18lb on a stock MAP sensor must be getting close to
"flat-lining" the sensor output. If you have no other boost control or
engine strengthening, you are asking for trouble runniing 18lb.

The name of the game is to build boost early... not raise the peak boost as
such.

thanks, that sounds good, at least I don't have to drive around
waiting for the engine to pop ALL the time
I have the boost most of the time around 1bar when driving with a
heavy foot, but as said, sometimes it climbs all the way to 1.25-
1.3bar... which is a bit too much in my opinion, but what the heck,
the car MOVES!!!
