tranny swap today... good lord...

Well, that was a bitch... Even with Andy's help (92ss satinsvoice)

We started at 8:00 this morning, in a sloped driveway... and got done at about, well, 8:00 tonight!

well, we did run into Vancouver (30mi) to buy a 3ton floor jack and a breaker bar.

but other than that we just wrenched all day... I did use a little bit different tranny gear mixture...

1qt Royal Purple Max-Gear High Performance Syn
1qt Royal Purple Synchromax
2qt Valvoline High Performance 80w90

But I didnt use all the Valvoline, only actually about 1 1/2 qts/

Quite the upgrade from straight Valvoline Gear Oil, that was what we put in that tranny before... And 2nd Gear was NOT happy when warmed up... But now I can shift into it at 40 with no problems... :D

So yeah, it was a pain in the ass, the car got its fair share of blood, I dont really want to ever do it again, and I discovered I need a new half shaft, ball joints, potentially a wheel bearing, and fix the wiring gremlin...

OH and the clutch fork thingy is a pain in the arse!

Well, I didnt mean it to sound THAT negative... I certainly dont regret doing it, but it was surely an experience!

And there was NO way in hell that it would have been done without Andys help, well, it was more like me helping Andy!

Out of curiosity, what part did you feel was most difficult? A couple years ago my roommate and I swapped my tranny and didn't feel it was especially hard to do.

Good man, Andy, for helping out!

Well, we had small jacks, and so it was a pain in the ass to get the new tranny in there and mounted. That was the hardest part, then trying to slide it forward and wedge the engine back to mate them together.

I ended up on top of the engine pulling the transmission into place while he pushed from beneath.

Yeah, I've done the tranny a couple of times and it's not the funnest of jobs. Having a lift and a tranny jack would make it a piece of cake though. If only....

Ah. Yeah, that part can be hard.

I had a transmission jack which helped with the lining up. A lot.

But, yeah, getting them to fully mate was still kind of a pain. I ended up putting the bolts in and slooooowly tightening them to force the engine and transmission together. I worked on the lower two and she worked on the upper two and we counted our turns out loud so we wouldn't tweak it to the side or anything.

Another thing that can help is to turn the crank pulley back and forth a little, in case the splines are interfering.

And, also, a lot of shaking, because it's never fully lined up.

My brother and I swapped the tranny in my 93 L wagon (which is still for sale btw) yesterday in 3 hours and 40 minutes. Without a tranny jack :D

well, I got it all to work, i had to rewire something...

Anyways...

All is well... but the clutch feels really wierd... We didnt bleed the clutch, just removed it off the tranny and reinstalled it into the new one...

It feels really short and engaged hella fast.

Any thoughts?

Bleed it. Did you install the spring on the clutch fork? I ran mine w/o one for a while and found it felt better with one on. Each to his own. Although, since I've installed the spring (and new clutch piston), I haven't had the clutch pedal stick/drop to the floor either.

Section 2-8, page 8 of the 92 Service manual Legacy777 has posted has the details.

Basically loosen the air bleeder screw, depress the clutch, then tighten the screw again.

So far... FANTASTIC!

First gear actually HAS a synchro that works now... And I can shift into second at any time I need to... It rocks!
