transmission swap question

Hello all,
I currently have a 2nd generation legacy sedan and am looking into maybe getting a 1st generation legacy turbo wagon if i can find one, or a na wagon as a project. I want to lift it and put on at least 29 inch tires but change my gearing to keep the performance. My question is can a 4.44 auto transmission from a obd2 1996-1997 legacy outback be swapped for the auto transmission in the obd1 first gen wagons without causing any problems like check engine lights and stuff. I know they will physically bolt up but what about the sensors and tcu compatability. Will the outback auto tranny have the same sensors as the obd1 auto tranny and just have some extra sensors added for the obd2 stuff . Is it basically plug and play? If it is which transmission tcu would I use? I assume I would use the tcu from the first gen obd1 wagon. Any information would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
