Hey guys, just wondering how you would go about building an engine for your car with a $6,000 budget for parts. This is not for me, just in general.
What turbo?
EM?
Fuel?
Block?
Heads?
Internals?
Intake Mani?
Tranny?
Clutch?
Thanks

For $6,000 you could get a stock Ej257 and an EMS to run it on. The only EMS I have ever messed with is Megasquirt but I know Microtech Haltech and a bunch of others work. Megasquirt is just the cheapest but it doesn't offer very good support for IAC valves or knock sensing.
Or you could get an EJ22 block with forged pistons, they already have beefy forged rods which should be good I think. Anyway you could do the whole EJ22 and get some JDM Ej20G or STI type RA heads for around maybe $4,000. I guess in the end you'll spend as much as an EJ257 after you add the turbo and all that. Because you gotta rebuild the heads, rebuild the block, buy all the seals and all the extra. It's a ton of stuff and it'll add up pretty quick.
I'd say just get the STI engine with low miles so you don't have to touch it and well to get a bigger turbo... that's out of your price range. I would get a Disco Potato but that kit is $4,500 alone.

So the tranny is included? A strong one eats up about 3/4 of that.

Am I the only one who doesn't feel comfortable throwing out a partslist without knowing the intended usage?
I don't think I could justify $6,000 on anything less than a race motor. Now, if you talking the whole package (intake, exhaust, clutch, trans, etc.) that's different then.

Hmmm, you're buddy must drink pretty crappy beer.

One more thing, do you plan to be able to stop the car and turn, or do you just want to go like a bat out of hell in a straight line?

Yup - Buddy #1 is a Welder/fabricator from PR who has fabbed 3 tube framed (3/4 chassis) drag cars in the past 3 years on his spare time, he does not speak much English (can't is not in his Vocabulary) but he knows the words COORS-LIGHT.
His TIG aluminum welds look OEM as do his MIG & TIG steel welds - no popcorn here!
I don't drink so the $15 of beer is all for him!

I had my Honduran neighbors do the chutch in my Legacy. They may not know a lot of english, but they speak wrench fluently. And they work on cheap weed, which I've never turned down either.

After 2 years of not being finished,I got a loan to do so (and pay a doctors bill). I took 3000 a month ago... besides the $600 for the doc, the 2400 went in approx 12 hours. Moral of the story? I am not one lick closer. Wait no the transmission is back in the car... and the block is still on the bench.
