So I just bought a 90 L MT with overheating problems. So the guy I’m buying it from said that it didn’t overheat until he would get off the interstate after driving for 12 or so miles. But I haven’t picked the car up yet so I haven’t got my hands on it yet to do any diagnosing lol... but do you guys got ant ideas what exactly might be the problem???
the radiator was replace about 20k miles ago but im not sure on the thermostat or water pump
thanks
Ben

It could be a blown head gasket. Why are you going to get a car with known overheating problems? It better be cheap...

Ben,
My guess is a thermostat or temp sensor. If it's only overheating after coming off the interstate then I would guess it's not getting enough circulation or the fans are not turning on. The thermostat of course controlling the flow and the temp sensor driving the fans.
They are both relatively cheap to replace and easy to access.
I'm doubting the HG because you'd see the overheating all the time. Go ahead and check your dipstick for any sweet smell/thinning and the overflow tank for dark traces of oil in it.
Does the car smoke or throw any CEL's?

Yeah now that I think about it, Lee is probably right.
If the fans aren't kicking on, then the fast, cold wind blowing through the radiator on the freeway probably keeps it cool enough, but then once it gets off, it just overheats.

talking about overheating where should the gauge be at on our cars a little below the middle?

Mines usually right at the middle, sometimes it 'looks' like it's a little lower but that just might be my eyes playing tricks on me.
