2.35L Torque Questions

So I was wondering how many here have stroked their motor to 2.35s
I'm worrying that its gonna have so much torque that it'll kill my tranny really quick.
What do you guys think?
Think it'll be enough to kill a stock legacy turbo 5mt with 157k miles on it?
I'm starting to think about assembling my 22t block (the stock one thats not messed up) with 25d heads and a vf12 with 440s and a perfect power.
I dunno, what do you guys think?

The transmission will live as long as you treat it nice...

Because my first 5mt died because I hammered it.

Well...I doubt it was power that killed it...since your car is stock

Treat it nice, my 1990 NA tranny held way more power than your making.....

Just drive it nice man...
Shift slow, no clutch dumping, etc
You don't break gears with power, you break gears with crappy shifting

Good point.
So how much more torque will a 2.35 have?

As much as it makes...
You can't really assign a specific torque value, especially with a turbocharged engine that is affected by so many factors...
Come to OTR this weekend and talk to Dave Hintz in car #207...he runs a 2.35 in it

Done!
Well, with ej25d heads, a vf12 on 15lbs of boost?
And of course a 3in tbe and ic.
Oh and 440s and a perfect power.

Quite a few people are running 2.5l STI DBW engines in cars with stock RS transmissions which are essentially identical to the NA Legacy trans (gear ratios of course are different).
There has to be some weak link in the system and many choose the clutch. You get a clutch that is just only able to hold the power you've got so that it can slip when you mess up instead of snapping teeth off gears.

And I have a stage 2 clutch.

Don't drive like an asshat, and all "should" be fine.

I think I've seen enough blown transmissions to know that this isn't true.
Gear ratios play a HUGE factor. If your worried, find a 4.44 Forester trans or something. It'll spin like CRAZY on the highway, but the added final drive will reduce gear breakage. It won't eliminate the possibility, but it will help
Of course not launching and not shifting really aggressively will help, but power alone is capable of removing teeth from the gears. You would be shocked at the number of "I was just rolling along and punching it in 3rd" stories I've heard over the years. Even exclusively open-track-raced cars blow transmissions and they are generally easy-shifting for the most part.
There are two schools of trans failure in high output, stock transmission cars. Those who HAVE blown a transmission, and those who WILL. Mark my words, it is only a matter of time. And it's such an inconvenient occurance. It ruins your day, makes you late for something undoubtedly important, and ultimately causes a lot of heartache.
What's the point of having the power if you can't lay it down? What an American Muscle problem to have. "How about let's go from a roll..." Half the fun of having a lot of power and AWD is to be able to come out of the hole and cross 60' in 1.4 seconds.
If you want to be safe, find a 4.44 Forester tranny or do a 6-speed swap. Not to say you won't blow up a Forester trans, but the high final drive does help prevent it.

I've had good luck with my 4.11 box taking a fair beating.
I should have qualified my statement Phil...I don't think at the kind of power Spencer will be making that the gears will just sheer from getting on it.

Anything beyond 260 to 275lb-ft and the 3.90 box is really going to start hurting. Mine went with little more than 270lb-ft.

And I'm shooting for around 300lb-ft.
And, yeah, I have 3.90.

Okay, well that makes sense on the tranny.
You constantly say that.
And then crack jokes at peoples car when they cant here you. (You know what I'm talking about). Then directing something that had no appearance as a joke towards someone... 'nuf said.
Thats not cool man.
