Use a VSS1 from a 95 or later Legacy, 98 or later Impreza or any Forrester and then you can use the electronic speedo drive from any of those clusters mounted to the back of your custom unit.

Not only will it do away with the cable that wears out over time but the interior will be quieter since you don't hear the noise from it rotating or the NVH transferred through its metal exterior.

what is a VSS1

Vehicle Speed Sensor number one. It replaces the unit that the speedo cable snaps into.

how much do you think subaru sells that for.

No idea. Why not get one from the junk yard or a nasioc user? They are fairly common since used transmissions usually have them attached and they rarely stop working.

You hook it up to our car just like any other car. There is no difference between cable driven speedometer transmissions and electronic speedometer transmissions.

... I'm going to choke you!
It does eliminate the cable. I said there is no difference in TRANSMISSIONS between cable driven and electronic speedometer cars.

On the side of the transmission is the hole that either the cable comes out of, or the VSS1 sits in.

The VSS1 transmits the Speed to the Cluster by WIRES.

By changing to the VSS, you eliminate the speedo cable.

But then you have to have a dash cluster that can read the VSS.

I say just make a plate to put the gauges in above the din panel for the radio.

You have plenty of room ( it worked good for me- 3 gauges there no problems)
