Which struts are these?

I bought a 91 SS and it came with these struts and I think he said they were off a 02-03 WRX. I put one on today and I'm going to put the rest on in the next couple days.

What exactly will these do for me? What's the difference between these and the stock 91 SS struts? They look almost identical.

Just wondering if these are going to make a difference over stock.

I got the front ones on my 91 legacy and they swapped right in no problem. I got the rear ones out and the springs are different. The stock ones have skinnier springs at the top than the WRX springs and the top hat thing is different too. One of the bolts is spaced too far apart and won't line up with the holes on my car. So I decided to just swap the top hat but when I got it off I realized it was all one piece and it won't fit on the larger WRX spring.

Now what can I do? Should I find some different year/car struts and springs or should I just put the stock ones back in? If I put the stock ones back in the rear should I put the stock front springs in too or leave the WRX ones in there?

I would like the car to be an inch or so lower and stiffer springs.

Do a search here for tapered springs.

The 89-91 had a slightly different setup than later models, but it CAN be changed to fit.

OK I just searched for a good half hour and I'm not getting anywhere. I gathered that 04+ STI struts and springs should fit a 91 SS sedan. It got confusing because they're using all the chassis codes like BC/BF/BJ and I don't know which is which.

I am having the SAME exact problem as you.

I bought the STi springs, and mine are a larger dia. as well, but the 91 springs are much smaller, which makes our tophats virtually useless.

I was thinking that if you can source 92-94 rear mounts these MAY work...The Dia of these springs are about 6" throughout, I don't know if anyone can get measurements on the 92-94 Legacy top mounts.

Also, did the Legacy top mounts work for your fronts, or did you just swap the whole spring and strut set without changing anything?

I removed the struts and springs fromt he front of my 91 and bolted up the WRX struts and springs and they fit perfectly.

So are you saying I could go to the junkyard and find a 92-94 legacy and take the rear top hats off one and they'll fit these WRX springs and the bolt pattern on my 91?

They will bolt up, but I am trying to figure out if the dia. of the 92-94 is the same size as the wrx springs.

the diameter of the 92-94 springs and the 02-03 WRX springs are close enough that they work.

Alright well I'm gonna hit up the junkyard in a couple days probably and see if I can snag 4 KYB GR2 struts/springs from a wagon I saw the other day. Not sure what year but I'll find some strut mounts from a 92-94 as well. Should be dirt cheap at this junkyard.

I got my motor today so I need to get some struts back in the car to roll it out of the garage so I can put the motor inside and clean it up and get new gaskets, idlers, seals, belts, etc and drop her in! I'm excited! Can't wait.

Oh really? Where you live, Tacoma? That's an hour away. I was just at the junk yard which is about 20 minutes from here and I snagged a pair of KYB GR2 struts and springs off a 91 wagon and I was going to get the fronts two but the guy only had one on the front and the driver side was stock. The junkyard was closing in 10 mins so I said screw the fronts. I did find a 93 turbo wagon that had a pair of struts in it still(the only one that did)with the larger diameter springs that I was going to go rob the top hats off of tomorrow.

So if you live in tacoma I think I'd rather go to the junkyard than drive through all that traffic up by fort lewis.

Thanks for the offer!
