RHD JDM Intermittent Stall

Hello All,

My first post here...have enjoyed reading others for a while. I own a JDM RHD 1991 Legacy GT with the EJ20G and an automatic transmission.

Great car, love it, perfect for the winter's here in Calgary..... However, it has develepoded an issue that has made it unsafe to drive. It began stalling at random times and I can't figure out what is causing this.

It stalls when driving normally, when the foot comes off the accelerator while driving, while sitting in the driveway idling, etc. It usually starts right away again, but sometimes it takes some coaxing and then it runs like new (until it happens again), one thing I have noted is that it has not stalled from cold.

With regards to frequency, you can be sure it will happen once every 10 minutes of driving (though lately I haven't driven it a lot except to test it or take it to a technician)

I initially took the car to a Subaru "specialist" shp in town and they replaced:

1. Crank sensor
2. Cam sensor
3. Atmospheric Pressure Sensor (I had to order this from a wrecker in Australia)

Three times they said "It's fixed!", I picked it up, only to have it stall on the way home. Extremely disappointing and I will not be taking it back there.

The only code they ever said it had was for the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor....and changing this did not fix the problem.

I don't know a lot about diagnostics but I have looked for the black flash code wires (as discussed in other posts) and cant find them.....I think it has an OBD port...is this possible?

At any rate, I was wondering if you guys had any ideas. So far, I have changed the fuel filter (no fix) and I think I will change the fuel pump next so that I can rule out "air" and "fuel" and focus on spark.

I removed the stock pump and turns out it is a JECS A42-646055 which was only used on the early Legacy's with the EJ20 and the 92-00 WRX (which wasn't available in North America I understand). So if anyone has a source for this or another solution, let me know (I tried the one from the 2.2T and found that it has the wrong base to it).

The only other thing I can suggest is that there is a red wire heading into the fuse box under the dash that a technician tapped ( a couple years ago) to run the relay for the daytime running light system ... it is a small wire and I have removed the tap and there is some exposed wire. I will try and describe it more clearly ASAP.

So that's it.....if anyone knows a good technician in Calgary I could take it to, or how to get the correct (or next best) fuel pump, or any other suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

I am not sure what the issue with the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor was....I was just told it threw a code. I regret not asking the technicians for the replaced parts to be returned to me.

I will order a Walbro 255...I saw some pics on the internet and it looks like a good fit..$100 seems reasonable to me.

I will also check out the IACV posts and give an update on that hopefully this weekend.

As for the wire that is damaged, it appears to be wire a5 in the following diagram for 1990 legacy's....I can't find where it goes...

Ok, don't mind me while I hi-jack this thread:

Check out the IACV, I don't think your DTRLs are anything to do with the issue. Sounds like you went through anything else that sounded like a possibility

Nice clean car.

Please tell me you do not have a rear wiper?

I bet there is a rear wiper on that car.
+1 clean car!

Adding from my previous post:

HOW does it stall?

My piggy back hiccups every now and then. The RPMs dip below 6000 for a few seconds bouncing between 6 and 4k. But it rarely dies.

Does yours just die, or does it do anything to tell you it is going to die?

Yap, Good thing about that engine is that the IAC is alot more easy to access over our EJ22T, Good luck!

Nice car you have! lucky guy looks really clean to. As others mention IACV. Get some throttle body cleaner that says for IAC or IACV safe something like that. Basically just spray it down the tube that goes to the IAC valve. I will find a good pic for you.

I see everything but an a5, did you mean something other then a5? If not, where is a5

Hi Josh,

Yeah...I couldn't find the a5 wire on the diagram either (though I believe this is a wiring diagram for a 1991 north american legacy....which leads me to believe either

a: I have the wrong wire
b: It is EJ20 specific

I was wondering if anyone else had the same red wire going to the a5 port on the fuse/relay box. I will post a pic this weekend.

Thanks for all the input from anyone I will definitely work on the IACV this weekend....can anyone recommend a product in particular?

Regarding the way in which it stalls, mostly it happens when I am driving and I simply have to pull over and restart...however once I let it run in the driveway and it began surging and lagging (between 300-1000 rpm) and continued to do this for many minutes...it only stopped when I revved the throttle and let off...this caused it to stall.

BTW - it does have a rear wiper and rear window fan (dual speed), power folding mirrors, and auto climate control. Sure easy to love.

Man oh man we only wish!!! Does the climate control work well? Lucky guy. I always looked at the option of a RHD legacy but I just can't see myself driving on the RH. How do you find making left turns?

Matt,

If you can find a diagram of that wire you're talking about, that would be helpful. There is a link to a non-us factory manual in the stuff you need to know forum.

When it stalls can you revive the engine by giving it some gas. I had a similar issue that turned out to be the MAF sensor.
