So my 93 wagon leaks oil like crazy and I can't use the heater in the car because it stinks so bad, goes right onto the exhaust and the fumes are nasty. car has nearly 190k on it anyways so the motor is coming out, I should be able to lift it out sunday afternoon depending on how much time i can get free this weekend.

anyways, the 94 wagon has 145k and runs great, and the body/interior is awesome, while the 93 is a dented, rusty, hunk with awful interior. i think since i'm going to go to the trouble to rebuild the 93 motor, I should chuck it in the 94 shouldnt I?, to have a great car with a zero miler in it. then put the 94 motor as-is into the 93.

the other thing is the trans... the 93 one is a rebuilt AT unit with about 60k on it. while the 94 is an unkown quantity, I have to assume it's original.

Could I pull the AWD parts I need from the 94 4EAT and make my FWD trans work in the 94 car?

If I can swap the two trannies, then I'd have the best motor and best trans in the best body car.... the 93 can remain the beater and be used or sold.

are there any differences at all between the 93 and 94 EJ22 engines, or anything else motor/trans related? (other than the A/C, which the 94 has wonderful R134a)

To be quite honest.....if your 94 engine is running good, has good compression, etc. I wouldn't mess with it. The non-turbo EJ22 engines are known for 200,000 to 300,000 without too much trouble.

If it were me and I had the time to do the swap stuff, I'd swap the AT rebuilt tranny into the 94 and make that the "good" car. I'd then fix the oil leaks, assuming they're just seals, on the 93, and just make it FWD.

Yeah, I decided to leave the 94 motor alone for now. It runs great.

I got the engine out of the 93 yesterday and am tearing it down to see what all I need to do to it. However, since the trans is basically out of the 93 (it's just sitting there in the frame), but the car needs halfshafts anyways, plus I need to put in new balljoints and I have a new steering rack.

So, what would I need to do to swap the FWD 4EAT into the AWD 4EAT car? And vice versa (put the 145k AWD trans into the FWD car). Is it just a tailhousing swap, or is there more to it?

Damn the pistons and heads look really good for an engine with ~180k on them. Especially since this car has been beat on pretty good. The cylinder walls look GREAT with a nice cross-hatch visible all around.

I think I'll probably just very lightly hone it and re-ring it and, either get the heads rebuilt or swap them, then just replace all the seals and gaskets, timing and call it a day.

I dunno though, I'm tempted to split the cases, tank them, do crank bearings...

Whatever the case it will be nice just to CLEAN everything and get the years of oil spillage off of the entire engine, frame, and underbody.
