ej22t engine factory compression range

hello,

i've searched the forum as well as come up short using my haynes manual for the factory compression range. i think it's around 180 psi, but i wanted the lower range.

i found one post where a fellow board member was having starting issues and his dry compression was around 140 that climbed to 175-180 on leak down. the board consensus was that the engine was tired.

i've got almost 278k miles on my engine and have a spent valve. my dry compression range was 140-165. i'm trying to see if i can get away with a cheap fix and only do the top end. we're purchasing a house and i need to just keep the car running.

any thoughts? i'll be paying a shadetree mechanic to do the work since i don't have the tools or the space (or the know-how) to pull the engine. any perspectives would be most appreciated.

thanks

The factory service manual states the following for EJ22T compression at 200-300 rpm with the throttle fully open:

Standrd: 142-171 psi
Limit: 114 psi
Difference between cylinders: 28 psi

In my experience my compression test results depend on so many things that it's hard to compare them to other peoples' numbers. The condition of the starter motor and battery, how long the engine's been sitting, barometric pressure...

I don't know what thread you're referring to, so I can't comment on that.

To me it seems that most likely you'll be fine with just a valve job, unless your numbers varied widely between cylinders.

thanks to the subie gurus - please close this thread
