Blew out my illumination system

So I was screwing around and testing where to run my switch power for the relay for my new driving lights. I thought to test the illumination power from the lighter. I removed the bulb and connected those two wires with the power to the switch for the driving lights. Seemed to work at firs until I adjusted the illumination knob on the steering wheel....the fuse blew.

I disconnected the power for the driving lights and replaced the fuse....it blew again as soon as I turned the lights on. I disconnected the two wires which ran through the lighter illumination bulb and replaced the fuse....the illumination works but only full power, there is no adjusting to dim.

Where should I start to check for a short?

Does anybody have the illumination electrical diagram, if there is such a thing?

Download the engine & electrical manual for the 92 legacy from me. The information will be in there. You may have blown the illumination control unit.

Where is the illumination control unit located physically on the car?

My fsm suppliment shows a black 6 pin connector on the right side of the radio opening in the dash thats connects to the Illumination control unit.

Cant see how to access it. I'd start with the radio trim first. Might be on the left side of the glove box.

To the right of the radio, left of the glove box as Mike pointed out. I'd take the glove box out. You should be able to access it then.
