I must have some serious misinformation here. I just pulled apart 2 ej22 non turbo engines and both were open deck. I thought I read on here somewhere all ej22 engines were closed deck. Is it just the turbo block???

You gotcha - just the turbos (including, if I'm not mistaken, the 22B Impreza motor)

Scrap 22T halves- nasty huh.:

yes only the ej22t was closed deck in america. the 22b engine is also closed.
JDM ej20tt's are closed deck.
JDM RSRA engine is closed deck.
all USDM WRX engine open deck
all USDM STI semi-closed deck.

A few minor corrections.

JDM twin turbos are open deck. Some later ones might be semi-closed, but I doubt it.

In addition to the RS/RA motor, many plain-jane LEGACY EJ20G motors were also closed deck. Especially the earlier ones such as the 90s and 91s. WRX EJ20Gs are mostly open deck.

All USDM WRX EJ205s (2.0, '02-'05) are open deck. The '06+ EJ255 WRXs are semiclosed like the STIs. In fact, all turbo 2.5 liter motors are semi-closed.

what are you wanting the engines for? open deck is not that big an issue for most people. it's only at quite high power levels where it starts to make a difference.

ill have to look into the JDM twin turbo engines again, but the ones i have torn down were closed deck blocks.

Interesting. I've only torn one down myself. It was an early one with the HLA heads. It was open deck.

I don't recall ever seeing a TT pic with the crosshatching, but if a few exist I wouldn't be terribly suprised. Subaru did some really mixed bag things at times.

Either way, I agree... the open deck block is under-rated. Most peoples budgets cannot break an open deck any faster then a closed deck. On a proper build, and tune, the open decks are good for at least 400HP according to most of the repected "forum posters".

^agreed. opend deck is fine for mild builds. also it all lies in the tune.

Here's my EJ20H twin turbo motor which I believe was a 95. Open deck and it had the crosshatching in the cylinders still. Just sold it to a guy on NASIOC.
