90 legacy ls auto trans. the ecu and the tcu both read code 33.The cel comes on once in a while but usually goes off. has a speedo cable. works fine. Where the heck is the vss#2? Ive read it is in the instrument panel. Is it possible to remove the inst. panel and replace the sensor? Ive cleared the codes but 33 comes back. Also cc works intermittent. can anyone enlighten me on this? any help would be appreciated. Also its a 2wd

The VSS 2 is in the combination meter. Don't believe there's a way to replace it without replacing the combination meter.

When you clear the code, if you check it again right away, is the code cleared, or is it still there?

How are you clearing the codes?

Disconected negative battery cable to clear codes. Recheck ecu and get a steady blink. Drove about 10 miles and turn key off. connected black connectors, still get a steady blink. cel light did not come on yet. Usually have to drive a while for the cel light to come on then a while later it goes off. Then i get a code 33. TCU reads a code 33 after the 10 mi. drive. Not sure how to clear the tcu code. It says when u turn the key off it should clear the codes. Not sure.Next time I go on a longer drive ill check the ecu again. I kinda figured Id have to pull the combination meter, I was checking before I pulled it. Is there a way to check the vss2? Thanks for the reply josh.

Isn't this the VSS2?

It sits right under the speedo shaft and I assume, measures the rotational speed.

Yeah, nice pics. I guess I should clarify. There's no replacement part for the VSS2 unless you tear into the combination meter and swap parts.

That being said, I'm sure you could do just that if you wanted.

Regarding the clearing the TCU. Remove fuse 14, EGI/TCU for about 30 minutes.

Well I pulled the (egi at )fuse for over a half an hour. Went for a short drive and tcu read code 33 again. ecu still clear . Went for a longer drive cel came on ecu 33 came up. Pulled the comb. meter, took out the speedo , and put an ohm meter on each side of the vss2 sensor then turned the speedo with a small screwdriver and the ohm meter went up and down all the way while I turned it. Does that sound ok. I think a magnet pull the reeds together. But when I screw the speedo back into the combo meter and turn it , the ohm meter goes from full contact to half, back and forth. Still checking the wireing. I think the sensor is ok. Also I disected the cc main switch and theres two little lights in there, one is orange the other one next to it is clear. Whats the clear one for ? My ohm meter says it no good. The orange ones ok, it lights up.
Thanks for the help, Ill keep looking

Yeah, it sounds like the reed switch is working correctly. Should cycle back and forth from continuity to no continuity.

As for the cruise switch. One is to light up the button as you press it, the other is to light up the lettering that says cruise. You can buy similar replacement bulbs from radioshack.
