Turn Signal Swap

Has anyone tried rewiring a 90-91 so that the turn signals blink in the corners, instead of the stupid looking signals lower down on the bumper? Would it be as easy as connecting the turn signal wires to the corner bulbs? Or would it take more wiring and harness changing with a newer model. I know its scary to mess with electrical stuff cuz it can lead to other screw ups but it just seems so logical and easy.

Actually, Adam took out those bumper turn signals to put some foglights in there. Since he wanted to stay legal, I see that he wired in a couple LEDs in the corner lamps to replace them. They were the only lights that would fit in the corner lamps.
But since they are a different resistance than the bumper lights, the circuit is kinda screwy and the turn signals blink at twice the speed . . .
Not sure if you wanna do this.
BTW, do the bumper and corner lights alternate on and off times? That might have something to do with the increased rate . . .

Instead of putting the led's in there, I could buy amber tinted bulbs that would still most likely keep it legal, right? That should keep the circuit the way it should be, if it didn't I suppose I would have to get a hold of some 92+ wiring, which may be more pain then it's worth. Who's Adam, my name's Adam?

You can probably do it.....shouldn't be too big a deal.....you just need to get a connector for the light bulb. It may require some modifications.
I may look at getting a set of JDM side markers. They have the turn signals in them.

I kind of did this on my old '91 Legacy.
I cut little holes in each corner lamp's reflector and fit in little amber #194 bulbs, which I wired to use as parking lights. I then replaced the existing clear bulbs with amber ones and wired them in parallel with the turn signals. It was pretty cheap and easy and worked very well.

I personally like the clear corners we got here in the states on the later model Legacy's. I'm not sure which ones had 'em but mine do and they look great.

The 92-94 models have the clear corners.......all you need to do is get rid of the ugly orange bulb in there

Do the 90-91 legacy corners have an orange reflector thing that can be "baked and chipped" out like the imprezas, or is it the whole outside piece that's orange?

Yes, The little plastic orange peice is mounted to the outside of the corner. If you take out the bulb you can pop it out with a screwdriver using a moderate amount of force (from behind). I saw a 91 Turbo here in Ottawa and the owner did the same. Though you'll need some custom plastic place to make you up a clear replacement to put back in the orange peice's place.

Like was said.....it's not like the impreza where you just pop it out.....you will need a piece of plastic to replace the orange part.......probably not worth the hassle in my mind.

On the later legacy does the bulb have two filaments and leads?

Yes, the 92-94 Legacies have two filaments in the corner lamps.

In 2000 and up - there is two bulbs with two filaments - not what you want to know though!

to fix the wierd blinking problem you just need to get a relay with the right resistance. Why change the low turn signals?? theyre different and cool. The LED idea was brilliant.
I wanna get some of those 1,000,000 candlepower cigarette lighter lights, cut away most of the reflector, and stick them next to the corners. That would be awesome. Course, i already overwork my alternator with my already existing electrical junk.

My issue with the front-mounted turn signals is that you can't see them from the side of the car! That's just a stupid problem. If I'm turning to the left, I want people on my left to be able to see that. I fixed that problem on my '91 Legacy and on my '97 Impreza. My other Subarus haven't had this design flaw.
