Legacy off road Buggy!

Hi all,

Im matt from The UK.

I have made a spaceframed buggy, utilising the legacy running gear.

The engine is an Ej20 N/A, along with the box and diffs, making it 4wd.

However, i have been thinking about using a forester 2.5 N/A engine, to gain more torque for hillclimbing.

My question is:

Will the 2.5 forester engine use the same wiring loom as the legacy 2.0L?

If not, what other subaru donor could i use, preferably not turbo (for reliability)?

What year legacy is it? You should use the EG33 from the SVX! That would be sweet. 230hp of NA power.

I think the donor car was a 1995.

What is an SVX?! Bearing in mind i'm from the UK! I need to stick to a boxer engine too, as all the mounts are in, as well as the box/prop/diff etc.

Oh, and by the way, the buggy weigh's 680KG's complete with EJ20. So i wont be needing anything too OTT!

SVX was subaru's sports car.

Here's the EG33 motor from the SVX. 6 cylinder boxer motor. It's basically an EJ motor with 2 more cylinders. And 230HP stock.

I have found an engine, but really need to know the following....

Will a 2.5, dohc, 1998 legacy engine, fit onto the same mounts/gearbox etc as the current EJ20, 16v, sohc, from an early legacy?

Yes it should,BTW i have experience with hard off roading subaru's.You may want to consider putting a transfer case behind your tranny. It would be a stronger operation with handy gearing to boot, stock subaru gearing is useless when bigger tires and hills come into play.Got pics of your rig?

Does he mean offroad hillclimbing or asphalt? Hillclimbs in Europe are timed events up winding hill roads. He'll be fine gearbox-wise if he means asphalt.

I don't know about the speeds you'd hit, but going to a shorter final drive ratio will get you more torque without having to up displacement. The highest you can get off the shelf is 4.44. Not sure what your EJ20 would be. All EJ engines will use the same mounts.

Sounds pretty neat. You should put some pictures up!
