I left my car idling for 10 or 15 minutes the other day and when i got back
to it there was a valve ticking. there was lots of oil.

since then it has not gotten any worse.... but no better either. i put a jug
of crank case flush through it and did an oil change just after, still no
difference.

the Haynes manual says that all pre 97, 2.2's have hydralic lifters that are
non/auto adjustable....but i thought i read somewhere that the turbos have
adjustable lifters,

i'm pretty sure someone will know

when a v lifter is ticking does that do any damage should i get it fixed
asap

Too my knowledge all the US EJ motors have hydraulic lifters, including the turbo, so I don't think there's really anything you can adjust....

As far as it doing damage...I wouldn't say it's doin any damage...it's more of an annoyance....one thing that usually contributes to lifter ticking is not changing oil regularly...My old roommate had a 90 Maxima....this thing ticked SOOO bad....changed the lifters...most of them were rock solid...they should've been spongy. It stopped after they replaced them....he did an engine flush...and there was tons of crud that came out.

How many miles are on your car? Could just be that they're getting old...but for them to do it all of a sudden is kinda weird. Did you recently change brands of oil or do anything else that might affect them. Does the noise go away when revs increase?

Personally unless they sounded REALLY bad...I probably wouldn't worry about them right now...but depending on mileage and care....it may be a warning sign for other problems though.

So that's about 80,000 miles....you said you did an engine flush...one of those flushes in a bottle right? Was this before or after you noticed the ticking? If it was before ticking....it could be that the flush, flushed oil buildup or whatever out or in passage ways...restricting oil to the lifters. If the noise came before you flushed then I'm not sure...did the noise get any louder or quieter after the flush then? If you listen to both sides of the engine, do both sides sound the same....or is one side louder?

As for future problems, since oil is what supports the hyd lifters, it could be oil pump slowly loosin pressure, or just that the lifters are getting old.....However 80,000 miles seems a little soon to have lifters go, especially if the engine has had routine oil changes.

I think I'd drive it for now and see if things get better or worse, or don't change.

Not sure what more to tell ya....sorry.

My grandfather has an L-series 1.8 efi (Australia) and had the same problem. Thought the noise was there since day one. The mechanic said that there is a spring on the right hand side of the engine under the tappet cover. He was told to stretch the spring by half an inch and the tappet noise will disappear. We stretched the spring quarter of an inch and the noise disappeared.
