door lock doesn't lock

Unlike many who have their door lock when they try to open it... I have sort of the opposite problem with my passenger door. Often, when using the auto lock from the driver door, I notice the passenger door only appears half locked.

Sure enough, if you try to open the door from the outside it's not locked. Additionally, from the inside with the door closed, if you try to push down on the lock, there is a lot of resistance and it won't lock. The only 'fix' is to use to automatic locks unlock and then lock from the driver door. That'll almost always fix the passenger door.

Now a similar issue with the driver door. Once again, using the automatic locks from the inside, I'll lock the doors (driver door is open). I can see the driver lock appears fully closed. Close the driver door, try the handle and sure enough the damn thing is unlocked! Only way to 'fix' it is to put the key in the door and turn it left and right, to once again engage the automatic unlock/lock function. This issue doesn't happen all the time either, as I now make a habit of checking the doors before leaving the car.

Whats the deal with my locks?

Old age slowly kills the actuators.
You could replace them.

Yup. Actuator.

The latter problem is so you won't lock your keys in the car. You can only lock the driver's side from the outside with a key. If you lock it on the inside and close the door it automatically unlocks it for you so you can't lock your keys inside by accident.

No, you don't have to use the key—you hold the outside handle up when closing to lock the door. It's informally called an "idiot lock". Was common on Japanese cars for a while. His issue is a bad actuator.

Yeah or you can do that. But if you're focused enough on what you're doing to do that, I'm sure you'll check your pockets for the keys first.
