Experience with electronic antennas

Does anyone have any experience with the electronic antennas that are out there? I really question whether the reception would be that good. I want to take the stock one out and weld up the hole, but I really don't want to give up a bunch of reception. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can get the stock unit brand new complete for about $100 at the dealer seems well worth it the stock unit is pretty good for many years as long as you don't hit it and lubricate and clean it every so often with silicone spray.

I have a manual unit in place that was lighter than the stock one. I want to get rid of the external one altogether.

To answer your question, you wont notice a difference switching to an electronic antenna. just make sure when you mount it, or any type of antenna for that matter, that its very cleanly grounded on the chassis where it mounts through the opening and clamp it down tight to avoid leaks.

I believe you're referring to the hide-away antennas that mount inside the vehicle, aren't you? They have an amplifier in them to boost reception. I recommend part #44-UA200 from Metra Electronics. It is a glass mount that you can put behind you rear view mirror and you'll barely notice it. If you have a remote start or keyless antenna on the windshield I would install this in the rear window. I have personally used this with excellent results.

If you want it completely out of sight you could use Metra part #44-UA20. This works pretty well also but the glass mount one outperforms this one.

Ya, i want to get rid of the external antenna altogether. I was thinking of mounting it in the trunk somewhere, since it was closest to the cable for the stock unit, but really had misgivings about how well it would work being underneath the sheet metal.
