Engine stalls after 'clicking' from underneath the dashboard

Hi,
I hope somebody can help me. My car is a 92 Legacy Station AWD ATM 2.2l. And she runs fine in general, gas mileage is as usual. But during the last days the engine stalls quite often (especially when idling). First I hear a clicking noise (like a relay) from underneath the dashboard and if do not hit the throttle immediately it will stall.
While trying to locate what makes the clicking noise (I guess it comes from the ECU?) I didn't restart the engine immediately, but the ignition was still on. So I realized that the cooling fan got switched on and off periodically. The left (driver's side) in a 2seconds on and 2seconds off rhythm.
Does anybody have any idea what causes the stalling?
