hey guys first post on the forum. from canada eh. anyways i just bought myself a 92 legacy turbo and my brother just bought a 2001 impreza 2.5 rs with an extra blown motor the guy didnt want.

this new engine will be going in a different vehicle completely, but thats a different story. so with having 2 motors, i have some parts i can play with and an engine shop that i wont be charged any labour cause my dad works at the college (lucky me)

so ive been browsing on here for a bit but im a little lost on all these engines and parts. my brothers engine is the 2.5L so i think its the phase 2 heads. im going to rebuild the motor so i might as well stroke it too. so couple questions come into play.

#1. is the crank that i can use to stroke the engine from the SOHC 2.5 engine or do i need the phase 1 crank?

#2. if i use the crank from the phase 2 engine i can use the stock ej22t pistons and rods correct?

#3. if i use the phase 2 heads i will need to machine the water and oil ports from what ive read. what other parts can i use from the 2.5L engine.

#4. what benefits come from a stroker engine vs stock engine other then displacement?

ive been reading like i said but this is my first subaru and first time ive read about boxer motors. any leads would be great to help me out. i feel like a total noob right now haha. thanks guys

Welcome. Please Search on here for 'stroker' and EJ25 SOHC. Also, RS25.com and NASIOC.com have a ton of info on this stuff.

Of your questions I can answer #3: You can. Or just replumb it. People tap the oil sender on the front of the block for the oil IN, and the oil pan for the oil OUT. Coolant can tap into the system, too...read up on Where. The other parts would include some of the T-belt parts (I believe the Phase 2 use a different crank timing pulley and crank sensor - you can re-use the EJ22T's.) Remember! The Intake Manifold must match the heads and Phase 1 (EJ22T, EJ22e, EJ25D) won't work on Phase 2. You'll have some wiring , IAC, and possibly TPS issues, among others, to deal with.

thanks man. ive been looking up the stroker engines, some say you cant use the phase 2 crank and the one im following he is using it. so just more reading to me. the engine is going in a carbed vehicle so luckily i can use all the legacy wiring in my vehicle. i personally havent seen the 2.5 engine its at the college and my dad picked it up he said everythings there for the engine. so the intake will match the heads.

right now im just getting confused with all the short form lettering like the iac,tps etc. and also all the ej251 ej253 ej257 all the numbers are puzzling me haha i'll just keep reading and learning. lots of fabbing thats for sure.

IAC = Idle air control, aka ISC = Idle speed control
TPS = Throttle position sensor

little help rather then starting a new thread. im needing a new tranny for my ej22t going in my truck. there is a 2002 wrx 5speed tranny up for sale for $500. is it worth that much? also ive read some posts saying ill need a new rear diff? true/false? is it because of the gear ratios? let me know what you guys think he said he will take 450 for it. also what other stuff will be needed

For $450 the WRX tranny isn't too bad. One thing to note is that 2002 was the last year Subaru used the "narrow" gear teeth, so a 2003-2005 would prob take more power.

You're right about the final drive ratios, even though the WRX is a 3.9FD tranny, the rear end has a 1.1:1 (reducer?), so you'd need a diff from an 02-05 5mt WRX as well. Or an SVX if you can find one.

Lastly, if you already have a 5-speed SS, you already have everything to use the WRX tranny+diff in your vehicle. You can even use an 02-05 WRX clutch disc+flywheel.

my car is an automatic unfortunately. i bought the car for 500 bucks. im using the engine tranny suspension and steering to go into my mazda truck. my mazda truck is standard. i just read that i can swap the transfer gears from the two transmissions to make it so i can use the stock diff? can that be confirmed with someone? thanks guys. its hard to figure out what i can use and not use when im swapping it into a truck with a manual in it already
