My car has a stronger than normal fuel smell when driving around or just starting up or after ive shut it off. Guy i work with was behind me last night and said it smelled really rich... So could this mean head gasket going? Intake manifold gasket? Timing belt needs to be done still.
Could this also have something to do with my recent idle problems ( which seem to be getting worse )
171,XXX miles. TD04 TMIC 3"TBE walbro fuel pump.
Just did new plugs wires air filter fuel filter oil change 1500 miles ago.

I also smell raw fuel in my car, mostly while cruising. I dont see any liquid fuel spilling and it doesnt seem to be affecting my milage, but i can smell it. I thought it was some evap lines comming off from the gas tank or at the fuel vapor seperator. So i popped off the inspection covers under the back seat to take a look but i cant find it. All the lines that i can see from the tank to the injectors are connected and clamps are tight. The only ones i cant see visually are the ones right on top of the gas tank that connect to the hard lines that run up to the engine bay. Unforetunately that area seems to be the location of the smell. I have no interior so it makes tracing down odd smells easy. lol. I have already dropped the tank before and it was a huge PITA and would not like to do it again. It seems like a lot of work to have peace of mind, but idk where else to look and it has to be coming from somewhere.
I normally wouldnt have mentioned it on here but i saw this thread and i might as well chime in.
Its been happening about a month now since iv noticed it. Which is about the same time i did my walbro... Coincedence? I live in Sacramento and it has been getting hotter so thats probably the cause. Lucas, did you start noticing yours around the same time you did your pump by chance?

so i got a more definite answer where the gas smell was coming from... I filled up at the gas station and while driving i noticed the very heavy smell of gas. Enough to give me a head ache. Something was wrong cause i know i didnt spill that on my car. I pulled over and looked at where my back seat used to be and there was a small puddle of gas forming back there. Apperantly puddling up on top of the gas tank and leaking through the holes right above it.... damn, damn, damn. When i got home i removed the inspection covers for the fuel pump and the one for the level sensor. Looked around, but couldnt see where it was coming from. LAME. Looks like im going to have to drop the tank again... Im a sad panda.
