I have been opening my hood and seeing this thing and always puzzled me. Then I was browsing the FSM and I saw an illustration.
BEHOLD!

I use this whenever I pull a motor.

Very useful.

LOL!! I love that thing. Use it every time I do basically anything under the hood. Beats trying to prop it open with something else. Did that before and it slipped off and fell on the my head.

Anyone else trying to figure out how to make this the permanent hood support location? Like not having to move the support every time you open the hood. I have an idea for that but I need to improve it more before I actually start on making the under hood one. I'm thinking, for na cars, the bolt by the ignitor can be used as the mount for the bracket that will hold the clip. For turbo cars, I'm not sure yet as I don't have one to look at and come up with a clip mount, unless going off the top two throttle body bolts would work without blocking an intercooler or anything in that area. And if the throttle body mount works it can directly be applied to na cars and newer ones too. I guess I'll be looking into the throttle body area as a mount now.

Nah, in some situations you don't want the hood open that far such as when you have your car on jackstands in your garage.

You'd have a little bit of tweaking to make that the permenant spot due to it probably hitting the hood when closed.

All our Subarus have that as the permanent spot, I just hook the far end around one one of the metal fuel lines, works fine, doesn't rattle at all, my SS was like that, and my current BD and fiancés GC are all like that.

Yeah, that's the fuel filter. I wouldn't do that, but you're probably still less likely to combust than a Ferrari.

How Could that possibly be dangerous? It's not tight enough to be putting pressure on anything, and if you've ever pulled those fuel lines you should know that they aren't coming off with out extreme effort

I be more worried about the joint of the steel pipes to the can. Things move around a lot when the car's driving, but do whatever you want. I'm just saying I'd personally rather take the 5 seconds to swap positions on the few occasions I need to than find out something moving of flexing in there causes pressure on a pipe and eventually cracks it. It'll probably be fine.

Im with steve on that one. Hardly any effort to move it if i need the hood open all the way which is probably less than half the time i open it.

Oh man I FUCKED up my garage door in a rental house once when I had my propped up completely vertical(before I knew about this new hole) and started jacking the car off the floor. Before I heard the crunches it was too late. Hood was ok though

Haha. I have hit the light that hangs from the ceiling of the garage many times. Luckily it's hanging and not solid mount.

I guess I'm lucky, I've never had to worry about that. I've got a ten foot ceiling in my shop now, before that I did everything outside. Unlimited height there!
