have replied)

Yes this engine is a turbo, and I think Dave C's reply concerning the
automatic transmission is right on (he thinks it's at the mileage
where a rebuild may be eminent). That is one of the main reasons I
hesitate to have any further work done on this vehicle. What is a
ballpark figure for a tranny rebuild? I guess while I was at it I
would need at least the rear struts replaced,too! I'm still thinking
it over, any further ideas would be welcomed....

I'm stuck with a 4EAT right now, and though it seems pretty healthy
at the moment, i'm always looking out for alternatives.

There are a few, but the usual course of action, if you're serious,
is to swap in a MT transmission and rear differential for the
automatic.

Advantages: Acceleration is better , fuel mileage should be better,
MT is significantly lighter than the auto, more possible horsepower,
less expensive rebuilds, avoiding the "torque-bind" problem.

Disadvantages: Need to find a mechanic confident enough to remove
and replace transmission/diff with alternate version, need to source
parts, possible problems with ECU/TCU.

The Turbo MT is strong, but getting hard to find. Importing a WRX
setup from Japan is probably the most cost effective solution (yen is
way down).

I've come across several documents that lead me to believe the new
WRX is using the MT from the Forester, which is apparently a "heavy-
duty" version of the MT. Finding one of these should be easier.

To extend the life of the AT, install a Transmission cooler and
change the oil.

If you want to swap it to a MT, you have the option of getting a NA
MT and installing a beefier clutch. As long as you aren't pulling
300PS or so, the regular NA MT should hold.
