bad synchro

alright so this one is probably my fault.
The syncromesh in 4th appears to be bad when the tranny/engine are warm, but not when cold. Whats up? How hard is it to replace a synchro?

No, synchros are not easy, and no matter what manual you get (Chilton's, Haynes, etc. even though those suck anyway
), they will tell you don't mess with it...
However, it is grinding going into 4th? How is you clutch? Is is releasing in the same spot it always has? Is your clutch slipping? If so, it might just be that, b/c I had that very problem when my clutch went out. It's pretty freakin hard to ruin a synchro on a gear as big as 4th!

My synchros are all like butter when the transmission is cold, and all are kind of flaky when the transmission is hot. Basically, I'm pretty sure that what's happening is that the gear oil works fine when cold but gets too slick when it gets hot. That's not to say my synchros aren't worn at all, but the oil isn't helping.
My car's had a bunch of different owners, so I have no idea what kind of gear oil is in the transmission. I plan to try a mix of Redline's oils of different viscosities when the weather gets warm enough for me to work on the car. I think I need an oil that's a bit thicker.

yea, i think i did it when i shifted without the clutch and missed. Maybe ill change the tranny fluid and see if that helps. Its not a big deal, just a hair annoying.

I have had good luck with the following solution. Drain the transmission and refill with ATF and a bottle of Rislone drive for 2-500 miles drain and refill with a product from BG called Synchro Shift. This stuff is a bit pricy but it has worked and it is cheaper than a tranny rebuild. I have 35k on a '99 GT transmission that had about 10k on it when I got it and it is filled with this at about $15 a quart with no problems and it shifts great.

if your car is fwd- i got a brand new tranny for sale.

Nope, shes AWD. But maybe i could install another tranny in the back so i could use yours in front? would that cut the problem in 1/2?
