Oil , CEL

93 L wagon. Last night, kid says CEL is on as is the oil indicator. I go out and check. Oil is overfilled by at least 1/2 quart. How long has this been on? "not sure" is the reply. We let about a 1/2 quart out. He DC'd the battery, ( I wish he wouldnt have, I wanted to read the code). Took it for a drive, no CEL, runs and drives great. So, could too much oil trigger that? Also, I notice a small oil leak at a sensor located at the top of the motor behind the alternator. What sensor is that? thanks

The sensor in the block behind the alternator is the oil pressure sensor.

I don't see how the oil being overfilled could cause either the low oil pressure light to come on or the CEL to come on.

Yeah, too much oil would not cause the CEL to come on.

Just have him drive it and if the CEL comes back, check the codes.

Other thing to note....these cars can sometimes be finicky with reading the oil level, so it may read high one time, and then normal another. I have experienced this in the past, but not so much recently. So I'd suggest checking the oil again a couple times to ensure the level is where you expect it to be.

Good advice. thanks. I now suspect the OPS.

I never check the oil after unless the car has been sitting for hours, otherwise I've found the reading to be high when I know it isn't.
