Engine Rattling...

Okay so I don't really know where to list this, I need some help. So this doesn't happen when i'm NOT moving, like if i'm stopped completely it doesn't make the sound, but if i'm on the road, about 3k or higher and I push in the clutch to shift, it makes this 'rattle' noise, like per the RPMs. Only if the clutch is pushed in coming out of a gear. It will do it in neutral while i'm moving as well. But i'm coasting, and I clutch in and hit the gas it will rattle with the acceleration continually. It doesn't happen if i'm in gear above 3k. But does anyone know what it could be? I might be able to take a video of the sound.. it sounds like it's coming from the left side inside the dash or
firewall area. HELP

EDIT: I figured out the noise happens when the car isn't in motion either. So basically, any time the clutch is in it will make this noise. Any time the clutch is out it doesn't make the noise.

Bent or loose pitch stop? It's the support that's goes between engine and firewall. I would look there, mine got bent at transmission shop and it drove me nuts for about 6 months.

Just to confirm, the noise is engine rpm dependent and occurs when in neutral and clutch depressed?

Yeah if you could take a video or sound clip of the noise that might help.

Legacy777 you are correct. I will try and take a video tonight. It's raining pretty hard now so i'll have to wait for it to stop.

Well with the clutch depressed that takes the transmission out of the mix. So it's definitely something on the engine.

Any way you can pin point where on the engine it's coming from....or a general area?

Here is a video.

Sounds like it's to the left under the dash, near the firewall.. i'm gonna have a buddy try and look around in the engine bay with the clutch engaged to see if he can see anything..

That's an interesting sound for sure.

Out of curiosity, have you checked the crank end play? Does the crank move fore or aft at all? There should be a very small amount of thrust play, but it's really so small it shouldn't be visible without a gauge. Try having someone watch the front crank pulley when you depress the clutch. See if it moves at all.

Crank doesn't move. I have an underdrive pulley on right now until I can afford a Perrin LW pulley. Anyways, still haven't found the rattling source.

Well it could be something associated with the clutch fork mechanism inside the bell housing. You could try pulling the rubber boot around the clutch fork to see if you can see anything. Otherwise, you'd have to split the trans & engine to check.

Doesn't sound like it's coming from the engine or trans, sounds like it's coming from the left hand side near the firewall/dash. I thought it maybe could have been the speedo cable but that's been ruled out. Either way I don't think it's anything of a big deal anymore, I think it's some component that's loose or something

Could it be something related to the clutch pivot ball/fork?

Put it up on stands and run it. That way you could get under it too.
