so, ive been searching here and nasioc for a couple hours looking for the best route to take here but being new to the turbo world im getting a bit lost due to a lot of conflicting info im reading...


Available:
-I've got a seized up DOHC ej22e i'm pulling out of my 95 Legacy
-I've also got a complete ej22t longblock out of a '94 SS

-and technically, a DOHC ej25d, although this is in my dd '98 fozzy so i can't afford too much downtime to swap parts (unless it's worth it)

i'v never had a turbo'd motor before although ive gained a bit of knowledge by reading around,

Goals:
-I really want to shoot for more torque and low end acceleration than anything high end, this will end up as a dd/lightly tracked car...
-Aiming for 250whp
-Want to stay obdII

Budget:

- i'd like to upgrade the minimum to get the car running to start as inexpensively as possible ..and then build on it from there to find out which direction i want to go from there..
-College student, i probably wont be dropping more than about $300 on a single part


Build plan rough draft:

-1st gen Turbo Xmember
-ej22t shortblock
-eg20g/k heads, matching IM
-440cc injectors -
-wrx fuel pump
-td05 turbo
-delta camshaft grind (unsure of what grind yet)
- ???

Questions:

(1)will i need fuel rails?, side feed or top feed?
(2) can i run off stock internals to reach my whp goal? if not, what are good internals?
(3) i'm assuming i'm going to need the ecu matching the heads and IM, will i need the entire wiring harness from them too?
(4)^im hearing good about robtune, would a greddy emanage ultimate be a sufficient EM to use for that?
(5) what else do i need to know?

anything from that mess of info anyone would recommend?

You can't keep OBDII with an ECU swap. Well, you can but only if you swap to '02+ WRX ECU/harness/heads.

that's why i'm planning on swapping heads and such, to stay obd2, im just not sure which heads to go with as i'm reading that n/a ej25d heads are very similar to the ej20g, and ive already got the ej25 stuff in the forester as opposed to sourcing the wrx heads

Please don't take this wrong way, but unless you are getting some screaming deals on parts, $300 isn't going to be enough money to really get everything you need and work all the bugs out for a reliable driver. I'd hate for you to get into this project and find out it's going to cost a lot more money and/or you get mid way through and something doesn't work out right and you don't have a car to drive.

oh i know, well im really just trying to find out the best route to go, i dont mean $300 total budget, ha
i'm meant more of sti pistons and rings i see everywhere for $200, as opposed to wiseco ones for $600, and how i'm not too into dropping $1500 on a standalone.. from what im reading, decent sti and wrx take offs should be enough to put out the whp goals but im not positive..


ive got the forester to drive around now, the legacy is just sitting in the garage with the 22t chillin next to it

Ok, well that helps clarify things.

Regarding engine management, I'm not a huge fan of the piggy back setups, they just never seem to get the best results. If you can run a stock turbo ECU that can be tuned via open source tuning that'd probably be my suggestion.

The Robtune setup would keep the car OBD1.

Those parts will get you close w/the right tune. Essentially the same setup as on the UK/JDM cars of the '90's.

A WRX pump flows less (depending on year 02-05) than an EJ22T stock pump. Get an STi, Walbro, or Deatschwerks.

I'd get the STi/XT/GT 550's (525cc flow) yellow side-feeds - they'll fit the DOHC EJ25D rails. Much easier to source and since you'll need a tune anyway you might as well. The 440's are getting hard to come by.

And if you're bored read my THREAD about doing this...albeit mine is OBD1>>OBD1.

Also, No location listed, but no DOHC EJ22's in the US - just the SOHC....unless it's a 'franken engine'.

If you want to stay OBDII and run a turbo setup, DO NOT use the non-turbo ECU from an EJ25D or EJ22 with a piggyback; you will break things and it will run very badly. You HAVE to use a WRX ECU which means you HAVE TO have the WRX heads/intake and WRX crank trigger wheel.

It's a lot easier to go backwards and run OBDI with a RobTune ECU for your goals. However, the WRX stuff is open source tuneable which is much nicer. It's not as expensive as you might think to get a WRX heads/intake/ECU and harness. The hard part is merging the wiring.

i think i'd send the harnesses to iWire, ive heard great reviews from him merging harnesses...

but i think im just going to go with selling the 22t and looking for a ej205 to drop in, i think this build is more of me getting way in over my head for my first step beyond the n/a scoobs
