jinkyard ej22T build

first post!

right so on to the serious stuff, I'm gathering knowledge for my ej22T build. and like the rest of my subaru I'm balling on a budget. so i started with the theme of hand me downs or left overs from other builds build. ei: gd coilovers that no one wanted to buy, wrx intercooler, td04, things that are an upgrade for my subaru but are stock or no really wanted on newer ones.

and that brings me to my engine. i have an ej22T bone stock, whats the best way to build a reliable engine using parts from other engines? i know that is a very vague question, but I have a very vague goal in mind. i basically want the most power out of what i can find locally. if i had to put numbers to my goal in mind 300+-whp a lot of low in grunt, high revving, while not exploding every time i drive it.

so far from some searches and stealing ideas from other peoples builds. a rough plan is 25D heads, cams, thicker head gaskets, and then i run out of knowledge.

Welcome to the LC BBS, IAN.

First - to burst your bubble straight away - 300HP isn't possible w/a TD04, stock injectors, and/or EJ25D heads. You'd need @ least a TD05, 525cc + injectors, a bigger MAF (read on the limitations here and other subie sites), which means a stand-alone ECU, too. The Rob Tuned EJ20G won't get you there either.....250 but not 300.

Thicker head gaskets will kill your 'low end grunt' since it lowers your CR. Using the stock EJ22T HG and EJ25D heads already drops it to 7.5:1 CR.....it makes for good boost potential, but not so much for 'out of the hole' pep.

Keep reading and you'll get a handle on it. Also, Check out the Unabomber Manifestos on NASIOC. Lots of good info there to give you a foundation for your knowledge base.

You're almost throwing out oxymorons here. Cheap, reliable, relatively big (60+hp more than sti) power goals.

Once you start going for more power the pricetags jumps quickly and significantly. The rob tune and ecu is $400 alone. Heads are $150-$250 depending on seller. You'll need a td05 or bigger and that's $250-$500+. Intercooler and associated piping $75+. Gaskets needed $200 probably. Injectors 525 yellowtop sidefeed sti injectors for for $150-$200. Downpipe and exhaust $200+. Timing belt and water pump and idlers probably around $175+. Unless you go used belt and skip the pump. New stronger clutch and flywheel $300+. Gets crazy fast. Take all that and double it and its still easy to go over budget. You use all used parts and you could save a ton but you can forget reliable.

I'd be impressed if you did all that for under $1,600 and you'll probably want to get a 6 speed sti trans pretty quick as the 5mt won't hold 300whp if you're not gentle with it. That's another $3,000 easy. Gotta pay to play, unfotunately.

Welcome to the BBS.

My recommendation would be go for the 550 robtune ECU and supporting mods and then go from there.

As the others have pointed out, getting that kind of power cheaply really can't be done....unless your version of cheap and ours are completely different.

To give you an idea, I made 242 whp & 280 wft-lbs

with the following engine modifications listed in my build thread
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=47942

Granted, not all of those are necessary, but it's certainly not a cheap endeavor.

Yeah I've kind of realized 300whp isnt probably going to happen 200whp would be more realistic. I can dream cant I? And I dont really have a budget its kind of a paycheck by paycheck kind of thing. I probably will have over a grand in it by the end before a tune.

On to the serious stuff now, I've been digging some more into head swaps. And I'm starting to think I should stick with the 22t heads. For what its worth to make other heads function on my block I can have my heads machined to flow better and get some cams and springs.

I would tend to agree with you....sticking with the 22t heads is probably going to better, especially if 200 whp is a more realistic goal.
