So, being my genius self, I apparently left my AT shifter in one of the drive gears before removing the trans. Now the 5spd is in place, and I can't get my key out of the ignition

the big question is will it turn over when the time comes, or refuse to because it thinks its in D? If so, what's he best way to remedy this?

You need to remove the key interlock computer. As long as you do this and remove the TCU and do the conversion steps in my write-up you will be fine.
There is a button under the steering column that you can press to get the key out. Once you do that and remove the key interlock computer, you should be good.

Thanks a lot. I had already removed the TCU and the interlock computer, but was stumped when my key was still stuck. That button is pretty incognito!
