so my trans finally broke on me the other night and im up in the air on how i want to fix it. reverse still works fine when i put it into drive it takes off in second gear and stays in that gear shift to third and it goes into third shift to second and second works shift to first and it pulls the car to a stop it will not move at all from a stop in first gear and fourth is nowhere to be found. it made loud popping noise in reverse right before this happened and i was pretty hard the throttle when it did it. im going to be pulling the engine and trans out tomorrow night and i have a motor mount and oil leak that im going to fix while ive got it all apart. i was wondering if this sounds like a clutch pack issue or maybe something worse im also having trouble finding a rebuild kit for this transmission and am not sure where to look or trying to find a good used transmission but who really knows how well a used one was taken care of. part of me just wants to swap a speed into it but i cant find one with a 3.90 FD and i dont want to loose my lsd and i broke 4 5 speeds in my NA legacy wagon before i got this one. i would love to put a six speed into it but i dont have that much money to do that swap just yet and i really like not loosing boost between shifts.

Unless you are pretty knowledgable on rebuilding automatic transmissions, I'm not so sure trying to rebuild it will give you the results you are looking for. Unfortunately when something goes in the auto trans they can carry crud and junk into the valve body and other components which can cause them to wear or fail prematurely. So unless you plan to do a full rebuild with all new stuff, like I said it may not turn out the way you want.

If you can find a good used one, that'd be the route I'd go if you don't want to swap to a MT. But I certainly understand your concern about finding a "good" used one.

Transgo makes a shift kit. Their website is here, http://transgoonline.com/

so i finally got around to pulling my transmission out of the car and tore into the transmission and found that my reverse drum looked like it got really hot to where it is black and purple looking and my reverse clutches where toast and one of them is completely stuck to the steel ring on one side i think that my band popped out of place because where the rod pushes on it is very worn and it just kind of falls out of place when it is in there the rest of the clutches and bearings look good but im going to replace them anyway wouldnt make much sense to put it back together without doing that i dont want to have to pull it back apart anytime soon i havent pulled the pan or valve body yet to see if something is stuck or clogged im not sure if a problem with the band would stop first gear from working but i was acting like when it was in first and reverse at the same time when in first and would skip it in drive and take off in 3rd or 4th and reverse was the only gear that worked really good oh and on the transgo shift kit i cannot find anywhere on the website that tells you how much it is and how to purchase it im not sure if im just missing something that should be really obvious or not

I would suggest giving the phone # on the site a call and see what they recommend. I don't know if you can buy it directly through them or have to go through one of their retailers.

so im just waiting for my steels to get here for my tranny i was able to get the shift kit from a local transmission shop for 80 bucks they wanted almost 200 for it on summitracing i seem to recall a post that Josh had said he had the transgo kit in his car i was just wondering how much crisper the shifts are with that kit. I cant wait until its back on the road again i only had it for a couple of months before i broke it but the trans was on its way out when i got it and i knew it was going to have to be addressed

The kit did improve the 1-2 shift quite a bit. I just did the valve body and not the entire kit, so I can't comment on what the entire kit would feel like, but it should be an improvement.
