4EAT Trans Woes post Filter Chagne

So in an attempt to alleviate the slipping in my transmission until I can swap to the 5 M/T I decided that I would drain the sump, change the filter and add in some Lucas Oil anti slip.

Long story short it was a really really bad decision.

Some things I took not of during the day. Firstly there wasn't much transmission fluid at all in the sump no where near the 4.5qt that I read it held.

Secondly, the tube that's over the filter after I gently tugged it out of the holes it slides into didn't go back so easily it took a bit pushing to get back into place.

After getting the pan bolted back up I proceeded to fill the transmission. First I poured in 1qt of Castrol Trans Fluid. After the first quart I put in the Lucas A/T reconditioning stuff. I then poured in a second quart of trans fluid. I put in another half a quart of transmission fluid at this point.

My buddy then turned the car on and started to let it warm up. I checked the fluid levels after it got to normal operating temperature the dip stick was completely covered in cold red trans fluid. Worse, the transmission wouldn't engage when put into gear. So here I sit without a working vehicle and a lot of questions.

It doesn't seem like there's any fluid going through the transmission, however I stuck a wire down the fill neck and out comes soaked in transmission fluid all the way.

Have I simply overfilled the transmission or has something more sinister occurred?

If something more sinister has occurred aside from accelerating my transmission swap time table is there anything I can do aside from sitting in a festering pool of woe?

Have I completely killed my 4EAT at this point or is there some kind of rescuing that can be done?

You mention that the tube over the filter was a pain to get back in, are you sure it is installed properly and is not damaged? Same question for the filter/screen. They are not really filters, they are just screens, so unless it is damaged, you should be able to clean it and could try putting the old one back in.

Just to clarify, you are checking the proper dipstick for the trans fluid (the one on the driver's side; right hand side when facing in front of the engine)

I don't think overfilling the trans would cause it not to engage unless you REALLY overfilled it.
