I have a 1997 legacy outback the that I recently bought the speedometer has not worked since I bought it I have read that the gears that drive the speed sensor sometimes brakes when I pull the top speed sensor out the one close to the front of the trans and if I stick a screw driver in the slot in the trans I can turn it about a half a turn. So I am assuming these gears r bad I found a picture but I need to know part numbers my Subaru dealership cannot find the parts I need to do this. I found a thread that did a write up about it but no part numbers here is the link. http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=48090

Welcome to the forum! A good resource for finding parts for 2nd generation legacys (and other subarus) is opposed forces.

Here is a link: http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/us_b11/

If the internal gear isn't showing up on your dealership's parts system, it's possible that you cannot order it separately. Or that the counter guy is new ;)

You'll have to pull the transmission and split the case to replace the gear, I believe.

HI,
RU sure you don't just need the part like this:

That tab on the end breaks off.

They fail somewhat commonly. I'd just get one from a Pull and Save/wrecking yard before pulling the trans apart.

Yeah, I agree, the chances of the speed sensor being bad is higher than the gear breaking. If the gear was broken you'd be able to spin the slot around and around.
