i read the whole thing on replacing the center diff but the person doing it was doing it in a 5MT. i have a 1990 L Wagon with an automatic. will the phase 1 center diff fit my car. i have a chance to get a good one cheap but don't want to go through that much pain and suffering if it won't fit. thanx for the help. just found this site and it is awesome.
i've driven over a million miles in soobies altho mostly in GL"s so am a confirmed soobie addict. besides - it's the STATE CAR here in maine.

The automatics in the first gen Legacy does not have a center differential. It has a clutch pack that engages the rear drive, controlled by the transmission ECU.

so what exactly do i replace? do you have a picture or schematic

What are the symptoms? Most on this board eventually complain about a binding feeling in tight turns. It usually ends up being the duty solenoid to the clutchpack.

that's what it's doing. hard to turn and feels like my old F150 in 4WD and it howls. i'd hate to do just the solenoid and find out it was the clutch pack too but it sounds from this site and USMB that solenoid is the big problem and clutch pack hardly ever dies. car has about 170000 on it now and runs great.

and the other thing i need to know is will a 95 solenoid and/or clutch pack fit my 90 legacy? is it like the phase 1 and 2 in the manual transmission or ?????

You can install a fuse in the FWD fuse holder in the engine bay (pass strut tower). If the binding goes away it's likely the clutch packs vs. the duty c solenoid.
