Hi everyone,

I thought I would jump into the modifications list.

The Team Duct Tape car is pretty nicely done up. It was Tom McGeer's car first, then the Payntor's owned it, now Dave Koszegi is the proud owner/driver.

- The uni-body has been seem welded in key structural areas
- Full roll cage (don't know what type)
- Engine is stock, and the variable boost system has been removed cause I didn't like the set up. I hope to find a much nicer, easy to set system that is cheap!
- The suspension is STI struts and springs - that needs to be replaced ASAP (suggestions anyone??)
- The car is pretty well stripped for racing (unlike marks car which still has the stereo in it!)
- We ran Amsoil engine oil, redline tranny oil, diff oil, and we ran 100% water with redline water wetter.
- I have switch hooked up that engages the fans on high at the flick of a switch, and the racing temperatures dropped at least 20 degrees from Bighorn to the Rockies.

As a little side note: After the first stage Friday night, the rear shocks where shot. The car had been rolled before when it was rallied with blown rear shocks....so we were quite worried. We tried to get replacements...anything...even stock to get us through the rally. No luck. We finally decided to just take them apart and see what we could do. We replaced the shaft seal spring with a spring from a smaller seal. We then refilled the strut with the best oil we had in the shop....Hydraulic jack oil. We had no idea what it was going to do but we had no choice. We assembled it back together and tried it out. Wonder of wonders the damn thing worked great. The suspension felt great and there was no leakage. We raced the entire Saturday without incident and placed 6th overall. Not to shabby.

Any body know how to get replacement seals from STI, or have any suspension recommendations for replacement?

I know your car has front and rear tower bar, Do you know the parts #
about the rear tower bar, I am looking for it for long long time and
with no luck to get it!!
I did talk with John and Clack about the turbo control and its very
cheap set up just cost about $80 and make the car running adjustable
boost control and it works good!

I'll second that!! A set of DMS Golds are extremely nice and very tunable, I think they have a 50 mm piston rod....just insane

DMS is good stuff, but expensive. Leda struts are crap. Maybe some
adjustable Koni's or KYB AGX's.

side note: A spare set of struts is a great idea if you can afford it. Even
a set of stock legacy struts will get you through the event. Our time saver
is to have a whole set of stock struts and springs assembled. In case we
blow a strut we won't have to worry about compressing a spring onto a strut
and then put it in the car; it just goes in!

Oddly enough, the suspension on the rally car is lowered. When the struts
are out, the springs are not compressed. Just simple dissassembly takes the
spring off.....no need for spring compressors.

The idea of a full extra set is a great idea. If we do get a set of
aftermarket struts, the existing suspension will be serviced and kept as a
spare set.

The DMS stuff is about $4000 for set (holy crap!), that really takes a big
chuck out of the rally budget, so better bang for your buck solution is
being looked at. Mark's site indicates he is running Tien Struts. Any
comments on those?

Any body with an answer on the 93' WRC Legacy suspension set up used?

Is that $1800 US? Because if you convert to CDN, and include shipping and
GST, and duty, I bet it comes out to about $4000.

I don't know why they lowered it, it was my first question when I first saw
it. The STI suspension is VERY good, but I believe it is a road race
suspension. The quirky part of it, is the car handles the rough roads VERY
VERY well. Not a whole lot of suspension travel, but the damping is
perfect.

I have not been in a car with proper rally suspension, but this one is doing
very well with the STI suspension.

Still open to any and all advice....

I finally got my email program back...
My Tein suspension cost around 1800 cdn, about half the DMS. Other than
wanting stiffer springs, the suspension held up well the last three
rallies. No other complaints. Even over a off camber jump, the car landed
nicely and was controllable.
It is too bad Intercoolers did not come stock on our cars in N/A or we
could run them. John and Clark were running 15 to 17 lbs boost on the car,
the trick was using 50% race fuel and keeping an eye on the temp guage. I
think I am going to play with the boost before the next rally, maybe bump
it up to a constant 10 lbs. instead of the 6-8 lbs now. We will be at a
disadvantage the next race, 1 stage is 9min up hill, not very technical. If
Dave wants to see in car footage of Mountain Trials, I can get it to him.
We want the Subaru Legacy's in First and Second this race.

As a question, did you know if you still have the ABS distribution block in
your car? Just so you know, you are not supposed to remove it in Canadian
rallies. I would NEVER protest you guys, but just to let you know...

Also, John told me you are running Honda brake pads in the front of your
car, Can you get the part number for me? I can get race pads for Honda cheap.

Hi Mark, (everyone)

The Tein suspension i have read about as a new commer to the import scene.
Looks like they have some neat stuff.

I have inquiries at Prodrive and with Ohlins just to see what kind of price
and availability is. I know the Ohlins is quite expensive, but it is just
fun for me to research.

I still find it hard to believe the stock turbo was pulling 17 psi boost.
The race gas satisfies the fueling question, but I don't think they could
run 17 psi boost. We ran stock the last two races because the boost control
they had was terrible. Way to inconsistent for my taste. We did try the
race fuel the last race with the stock boost. I had almost rigged up a new
variable boost set up, but I had no time to test it with the strut fiasco
after Friday's stage.

As for the ABS block, it's still there. The car looks very stock under the
hood. I also found I was getting very contridictory info from the Payntor
team. I am gratefully taking all information, but I have to confirm
everything because some things were not possible.

I like this idea of the Legacies taking 1st and second! I feel personally
challenged to take out a WRX just because we can!

Unfortuneately I'm from Saskatchewan, and all the fun stuff is in BC.
Hopefully I can make Cache Creek, but I have so much on the go right
now..... I hope to be in a position where I can really do some things to the
car.

My goal is a reliable 14 psi boost, perfect running temps, and bullet-proof
reliability.

I keep the list up to date with whatever I find.

Hey,
Andrew from the subaru mechanincs told me about a Saab boost controller
that is available off the 9-3's for really cheap and works very well. It is
a computer boost controller that you can manually adjust the boost levels.
I am trying to find out more, anyone else heard about this?

I run a group N rally setup using Bilstein struts all round, they
last forever and take a real thrashing. It is impossible to bend
these struts unless you try to drive them though a post or tree. 40mm
front and rear shafts, the biggest of any car. They are adjustable
but not like others you have to change the valving. I went for a
medium hard setup and I have never had to change them for any type of
racing.

I would recomend Bilsteins, they cost about NZ$2,000 and are fully re-
buildable. I haven't need to do that yet, and they have had a real
thrashing.

I had STI suspension all round in my car and I find the Bilsteins
kill them, my cousin was always pissed with me because I would kill
him on the track and at that stage I had less power than him.
Especailly when I would pass him on the outside of a corner.
