AWD slow to react (1990 Auto Legacy)

So I've noticed lately that the Legacy has started slipping the front wheels in the rain coming off of a light and it takes a second or two for the rear wheels to kick in if I hold the throttle down. Any ideas why it would still work in the rear and is just slow to respond?

Worn clutches?

Put it on jack stands, put it in drive and see if it does the same thing.

I'll have to check that out once the weather clears up. Would this be in the center diff, you mean?

It's also a little slow to shift. Not bad, but noticeable. I haven't done a fluid and filter change in probably 5 years so wasn't sure if that could be part of the problem. It has 176k miles

I would suggest starting with the fluid change.

Also, try putting the gear selector in 2 or 3 and see if that improves the responsiveness or not.

Agreed on the fluid change. And wait a few weeks before you conclude it did nothing. I had a solenoid that was behaving kind of suspect and it took about a month for it to clear up after the fluid change.

Awesome! Thanks guys :) Gonna try that first. And I'll give the 2nd gear a go and see if it makes a difference
