anyone out there have a solution for this?

notes:
-car is a 1991 soob legacy wgn AWD...purchased two months ago. only
78K miles!
-vibration felt in steering wheel at speeds of 60+mph...vibration has
been felt since purchase. assumption was tires needed balancing
-just added 4 brand new tires
-wheels have been balanced 2X
-new inner\outer CV boots (right side)...mechanic check'd CV joints =
look'd ok. no "clicking" when cranking the wheel side to side.

mechanic suspects worn u joint in transaxle. he showed the amount of
play when the car was on the lift. it is noticable but seems weird
that it would cause the vibration.

what do you guys think?

Have you checked the brake discs, they may require machining.
Have you had the car wheel aligned, front and back, since the new tyres? U
joint in trans, what is the 'U' joint? Do you mean where the propellor
shafts meet in the middle, centre bearing? If this was out the vibration
would be felt through the car, not the steering wheel.
My old Liberty had 240,000km on the clock when i sold it, never had trouble
with worn trans. parts. Just the usual, CV boots/joints, brake discs. Never
had vibration prob's.

Even though everthing's been balanced, at speed you can have problems
with the brake discs that can make it feel like the wheels are out of
balance. This can be amplified by worn struts as well.

The transmission is not at all a likely candidate for problems.

I dissagree. The drive axles are the second weakest part of the
Subaru drive train and are very likely to break or bend.

Subaru are aware of vibration problems with auto trans Subaru
Legacy's, this problem is due to the drive axles used for the auto
trans models. The fix is to replace the axles with manual trans front
axles.

That's true. I wasn't saying the axles weren't to blame, but that
the transmission wasn't to fault.

process of ellimination.... starting with the more obvious lost cost repairs
first..... have the discs machined first...... have the car wheel
aligned....and then see....

thanks for all the feedback guys!

I'm going to rotate the front wheels to the rear this week. just in
case one of the rims are warped, etc...follow'd by the suggestions in
the thread.

another ques:
how long are the stock struts good for?
I was thinking about dave's comments re: worn struts. the car does
well with the "rebound" test...no excessive bouncing when pushed, but
the front right side does sound kinda nasty.

It's a combination of miles and time. Your mileage is about right
and the time is well past.

The KYB GR2 is a good, cheap replacement. The AGX is adjustable and
about %20 more.

The car will drive much better with new struts.
