I would tend to say you have an ailing oil pump. It's not keeping pressure up when revs are down, and is causing the tapping, since there is less oil pressure, but when revs are up oil pressure is enough to keep the tapping away. My dad had an 87 GL wagon that had similar problem. However the nice thing on the earlier subies, they had oil pressure gages. See if you can rig a gage up to get the oil pressure, if it is dirt low at idle, and goes up when you rev. Then that is most definitely your problem. I'm not sure how much it would be to change. I have heard, to replace the pan gasket you need to lift the engine up a bit, or take out the rear cross-member brace. So that would most likely need to be done when changing the oil pump.

It started about a week ago when I was driving along, if I took my foot of the throtle down hills the engine started making a tapping noise!!! If I revved the engine it would go away. I pulled in straight away and checked the way and checked the oil level, which was fine. So I drove home very slowly and could keep hearing the tapping noise coming and going as I drove!!! I have now changed the oil filter and oil aswell but the noise seems to be getting worse and worse!! what can I do Is my engine damaged some how ???

please help me I'm desperate there is no way I can survive without my car and a second hand engine is going to cost more then I can ever afford (£1000)

I am waiting at my PC for you replys

thx sooo much in advance

mine does that occasionally, but I just disconnect the belt, and it goes
down by itself. You might want to check fuses, the motor could have
overloaded the circuit and blown a fuse.

Not sure what else to suggest.

Anyone have any ideas about the automatic belt system
being stuck half way on
the track? my 91 legacy had the seatbelt move towards
the open position and the
belt itself tightened up, and did not allow the
mechanisam to go all the way
forward. I disconnected the belt from the mechanism
and hoped that it would go
to the correct position. Needless to say it did not do
it on its own and me
trying to push it back did not work. Any Ideas?
