I own a 93 Touring wagon w/ 100,000 mi. I have posted here many times
in the last year or so with problems with the car not accelerating
when asked to. It was a very intermittant problem to start but has
become more frequent. I pursued it as fuel starvation, plugs, wires,
and several other things too ugly to mention.

The car has developed a pulley squeak or chirp at low RPMs and the
crank shaft pulley has been slightly out of true. One mechanic said
this was a very bad thing. Another "Subaru Certified" told me not to
worry.

Yesterday the car died for my wife.... NOT GOOD guys....

We had it towed to a garage with lots of Subaru experience. He called
tonight and said the end of the Crank shaft is screwed and I need
either a new short block or used engine.

He found a used one with <60,000 miles on it that would cost me $2310
installed and can be done in a couple of days. A new short block
would be $2950 have a year warranty and cost $2950 but take over a
week.

Give me some feed back guys. Sound legit? How about the price?
Anyone want to buy a project car?

She's got a good body, good tires, good tranny, a Burgandy color and
used to run great!

I've seen this happen before, not pretty. Usually happens when someone
doesn't tighten down the crank pulley enough. It can wobble itself loose and
TOTALLY screw your engine.

Yep. =( But if only the crank is screwed, i can get you a deal on a 2.5
crank. That'll bump you up to a 2.3L and it'll bolt right in.

If you can find a used engine, doing the engine swap is a no-brainer (as
long as you have some sturdy tools and the service manuals). And it's a hell
of a lot cheaper too. But i supposed that $2310 is a good deal, considering
that my local shop wanted $1800 for a head gasket jobbie.

Again, If you consider yourself mechanically inclined, do the work yourself
or with some buds. on a scale of 1-10, the engine swap is about a 6 and a
half. If your in the western Oregon/Washington area i'd be glad to help you
out. =)

The crank pullies do wobble or look like they wobble, I have been told this
by a very reputable subie mechanic. Mine did it. When I put the underdrive
one on, it did not wobble, it was perfectly true, so I dont' know if it was
just the pulley or what. I would double check some things to make sure,
before you go about replacin crank or engine.

Hi-look at the approx. $3k as 10 payments for a new car & the price will seem alot more reasonable. I have 161k on mine and am upgrading EVERYTHING to the tune of about $7k (over a 2 yr. period) & will have a far better car than most for alot less money; think about it~ROD (No. Az.)

To add to what the other guys said about the wobbling and noise, mine
began to squeak terribly, but instead of replacing it with a stock
unit, i replaced it with an Underdrive pulley. What was happening is
the outer part was sliding over the inner part and making a terrible
racket. The UOR pulley solved this problem and lightened it up too.

As far as the engine is concerned, Teagues in NC (www.teaguesauto.com
can get 'em, and Paul Eklund from Primitive has a dealer-rebuilt
block for $2000 (get-primitive.com). CCR rebuilds and sells short
blocks with a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty
(http://members.aol.com/CCRInc/RebuiltSubaruEngines.html)

These engines aren't just turbo'd 2.2 NA engines, which is why the
serious Impreza guys frequently scout for them and build them up.
Any way you look at it, it's a great car and probably worth putting a
few dollars in.

In line with what Jason had to say, you should be able to have the
crankshaft replaced...

I just hate to see a good Touring Wagon go to waste!

messing with me on price.

Rod, you are right. In Nebraska by the time you pay the tax to get even
a good used car on the road you would be paying 1/2 the price of the new
engine.

Not to mention the credit card company soliciting me with the free
money........

My mechanic suggests replacing the timing belt on the used engine
"58,000 miles". Mine has 15,000 on it. Would you buy new or move the
15,000 model over? What should I pay for new?

Woa there hold the horses.. just want to clearify that.. I can take a 2.5L
crank and "drop it in" no modification.. and run.. it this true? you sure i
don't have to screw with anything..other than the swap..

if so how much you want for a 2.5 crank..

Personally, I'd just put a new one in

I think just belts are around $60. I know to have timing belts done on an
engine in the car at dealer is around $300. Not sure what your mechanic
would charge since everything is out

Carl-At 58k, the engine is just broken in (if it has`nt been abused). Timing belt, tensioner, idler, seals and possibly the water pump (have it & the oil pump checked while everything`s apart) should all be done every 60k; it`s normal maintenance. If the engine is out of the car it`d mainly be parts charges & some labor. If it`s in the car, prices for parts & labor range from $400-$600 depending on who does the work. Stay with factory parts (they`re virtually bulletproof) & use a dealer if they`re not too outrageous; you have a limited warranty + some recourse if you have a problem. I`ve seen both scenarios & the dealer is far better. Post again if you have nore questions-ROD (No. Az.)
