a couple of questions

I am new to this group as I just bought my 92 Subaru Legacy AWD Turbo and I
love it. I have been on other lists for my previous car (mazda mx-3) but
you guys are excellent. I am having a couple of problems with the car
though and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.

1) Some power accesories work only when they want too. The sunroof and the
power mirrors in particular. I know that someone responded on the sunroof
and am wondering if the same is true of the mirrors.

2) My mechanic says that the alternator is probably dying as the charging
level is low. I don't have much experience working on cars (except stereos)
is the labour in putting on an alternator hard at all.

3) My air conditioning was making a noise like a lawnmower when it was on
and then yesterday the noise stopped. To bad the air stopped with it. I am
still getting an air flow, but it ain't conditioned. Anyone had these
symptoms, I am guessing that my compressor bit the bucket.

Thanks for your time,
Dan

a couple of questions

When my air conditioner went it sounded like a lawnmower with a rock in it.
I had to have the compressor replaced. Apparently the stock A/C compressor
is not one of Subaru's strong suits.

On your intermitent sunroof and power mirrors operation, I would look for
either a bad ground, or a power supply relay / breaker / fuse that is not
operating consistently. One test would be to check if the power mirror and
the sunroof fail at the same time or independently of each other. If it is
simultaneously, perhaps there is a common connection point. Check you
wiring diagram as well.

Now I have a question: Has anyone ever replaced or rebuilt a 5-speed manual
from an AWD Legacy sedan? My 261K mile vehicle has syncros that are getting
marginal (have to double clutch and match engine rpm to avoid gear clash).
What is involved in fixing that problem, and are there used 5-speed AWD
transmissions out there for sale?

Rex

Daniel-installing the alternator is easier than putting in stereo equipment. Make sure you have a good battey first. If it won`t hold a charge, replacing the alt. won`t help. I don`t know how many miles you have on your car but I replaced my coil/compressor unit (can`t buy them seperately) @ about 145k when the coil was getting noisy. I think others have posted mileage from 100k on up for this replacement. If you need a new battery, I strongly recommend a red-top Optima (the yellow top is deep cycle & is normally discharged completely before being recharged) or any gel-type battery with 800 amps cold cranking power; you won`t regret it. I think someone else suggested a short in the wiring/switches for your sunroof & mirrors & how to track the problem down. Welcome & good luck-ROD (No. Az.)

a couple of questions

by Josh Colombo
Rod, are you sure about the red and yellow top batteries. The Red top is a starting battery, it has very high CCA's. I have talked to a few people that have the red tops that if they left it set for a long time it went dead. I have the yellow top battery, it was the BEST decision I made to buy that battery, it has MORE than enough CCA's plus it is a deep cycle battery. I have let my car sit for a month at a time and she starts right up. Reserve capacity of the yellow top is really good. I have competition level stereo in my car, about 75 amps max draw, and haven't had any probs with my electrical system, and the power out of the battery is very clean power. Like Rod said you won't regret getting a spiracle gel battery. There are however differences between some of the gel batteries, some are sealed, the optima's, and the others are not. The optima's have been around the longest, and to my knowledge pioneered the technology.

The main thing whether red top, yellow top pick what's going to work best for your needs. check out optima's website for info, contact their tech support as well. www.optimabatteries.com

Any questions feel free to email me.

Josh.

daniel,
Sunroof, fuse no. 15 (listed as meter), though this fuse has a lot of
equipment going through it. More possibly a relay / circuit breaker / bad
earth, will check the wiring diagram tonight.
The power mirrors obtain power through fuse no.3. more than likely it may
be the actual switch, mine used to play up aswell.
Regards, Rod...in Oz.

I bought a Red top battery in Sept '93. It was marked Reject on the
case with no warranty and it is now in my Brat as I bought a new one
for the car a year ago.

Not nice, the gas in the air con actaully lubricates the compressor.
These are expensive to replace.

What is involved in fixing that problem, and are there used 5-speed

I'm sorry, but you kinda lost me with this comment. Do I only have to
replace the compressor? If so the part isn't that much (I was quoted 230 or
something like that for aftermarket), is it the labour that is going to cost
me the money, or are there other parts that I am going to replace? I hope
that this car won't totally break me with repairs like my last one. But at
least from what I have seen the parts are about half price, so I'm not too
scared yet.

The balance (approx.) is R12 freon @ $45.00/lb. x 2.5 lbs. + labor @ $70.00/hr. x 2.0 hrs. You can see how the costs escalate; good luck! (BTW, I`ve seen a/c replacement & repair run as high as $1k +! So, feel a little bit better, OK?)-ROD

A good AC shop would be able to reclaim and clean your R12 if it is
still in the system and it sounds like it is. One thing to watch is
that Subaru used six different compressors in the early Legacy tears
and every one used a different mount. I have a compressor that I took
off my Legacy engine when I installed it in my '95 Imprezza and
went to a 134 Imprezza unit. It is a good "Zexel" compressor and the
