I have a 1991 Subaru legacy sport sedan. From what I
have been told these are the wheels I have: 15" in
diameter, 6" wide, with a 55mm offset. The bolt
pattern is 5x100. Im interested in buying new rims.
The rims Im looking at says that they are

Were originally taken off a Toyota Celica GTS bored
the center hub to make these wheels available for the
Subaru. Center inserts and chrome lug nuts are
included. Wheel size: 16 x 6.5JJ, Bolt Pattern: 5 lugs
on 100 mm center, Offset: 39 mm.

Does anyone know if this will fit my Subaru? Also what
size wheel should I look into to keep the speedo
accurate?

Thanks
John

FYI, VW golf and audi 2000 model year and up will fit your car as long as
you are not lowering the car. You can get the VW 16" aluminum rims almost
new for cheap, usually from tire shops new VW / Audi dealers.
I run these for my street snow tires, work great.

They will most likely NOT fit. I have a 90 Legacy sedan. I spent about a good year looking for wheels that would fit my car. The big problem is non of wheels had a great enough offset to suck the wheel into the fender well. I originally wanted to replace my stock 14" with a 15" wheels with 35 mm back spacing, that didn't work, I tried 38 mm back spacing, that didn't' work either. I have now a 16" wheel with 45 mm back spacing and they still rubbed just a bit, I had a guy taper my inner fender lip at the top, and it's been fine for a good 4+ years now.

I'm sorry to say this, but unless you find ones that are 45+mm or more, they will most likely not fit, they will rub. The earlier legacies have almost no rear fender flaring so trying to fit wheels on these cars is a little tougher. I would recommend looking at some impreza wheels or some newer legacy GT wheels.

Mine are a japanese racing wheel, which is why they have a greater backspacing. I have only seem them being sold at one place besides where I got mine, I was very surprised that the guy who got mine could even get them. They're about $200 a pop, (sorta normal) The company is called Racing Gear, I believe I have the Type M7 wheel.

Check out my site www.personal.psu.edu/jcc189/subaru/subaru.html I have pics of the wheels and car on there.

As for speedo, What you need to do is figure out how tall your stock tire size is now, and then look for a tire that has a similar diameter but in a 16" wheel. You will plus size, probably need to get a 50 series tire to get around the same diameter.

Just an FYI: A smaller dia tire than original will make speedo read faster than actual, and larger dia tire will have slower speedo.

Shoot me an email if you got any more questions.

Josh

Josh is giving you good advice about that back spacing. Your stock wheels are 53mm offset if I remember correctly (too lazy to pull out the manual right now...). Another great site is:

www.tirerack.com

the i-club gets a discount so you might want to check there first:

www.i-club.com

And we had a massive discussion about this about 2-3 months back, its worth searching the archives on this site for that info.

The pics at tirerack aren't all that great (let's face it, nothing beats seeing 'em in real life). But once you know what you are looking for, its prolly the cheapest place to get wheels from, unless you know someone. I can't seem to wear down my current rubber fast enough so I can get new ones. I know it's not for lack of trying however! I just moved to a new appartment that has some awesome off ramps to the highways. I hit most of them at +55 mph :o) I get a little squealing, I can't wait to replace them!

I currently have the exact wheels that you are talking about on my
1992 Legacy Sedan. I did have some problems with the tires rubbing in
the rear when I mounted them. To remedy the problem, because I wasn't
about to send the rims back, I spent a little bit of time flaring my
fenders manually. This involoved the use of several large hammers, a
maul, and a metal cutting jig saw (for removing the inner lip of the
fender). So with some minor modifications you can get the wheels to
fit. I've been running them trouble free for several months now. Send
me an e-mail if you have any further questions. Good luck! - John

John, a couple of years ago I tried with 15x7 et38 rims, and cut open
the sides of my rear tires..... I have removed the plastic cover on
the inner lip, that's probably the reason why the edge cut so deep
into the tires. Anyway, the tires were almost new so I wanted to make
sure I had the correct et the next time, you don't want to buy new
tires once a week.
I then put on some Alessio rims with et45, and thought that
everything was ok, but no, still some rubbing, this time it was not
that heavy, so the tires were ok, but I still had to do something
about it. Finally this spring I got TSW rims with et45, and then the
guards were rolled (like in this autospeed article,
http://www.autospeed.com/A_0194/page1.html ), and now, FINALLY, no
problems! Therefore, my advice, with et48+ you might manage without
rolling the guards, but anything less than that, get them rolled,
it's VERY annoying to drive around waiting for the tires to rub the
guards in every bump...

Regarding the tire size, check e.g. Dave's site
http://www.xmission.com/~dac/library/tiresnwheels.htm

Good Luck !

* Miki *

Oh yes, almost forgot to mention, my car is a '92 Turbo Wagon.

"92 Turbo Wagon" Cool mine too! I put 18X7 silver TSW Hockenhiem R, w/
toyo 35 seirs Rubberbands. After cranking down the coilovers it looks
really good But the (rear) inner fender
was a problem. I pulled the rubber strip out,and took a ballpeen
hammer(tire off) and tapped (light tapps) until it was out of the way.
Good luck,I hope this helps. Dan (southwestern WA, USA{Brooklyn})
