Low Boost

Anyone got any ideas why my uk spec legacy will only push 1.1 bar max at 4000rpm ? had a 3inch MRt system put on not long ago so its not back pressure?

Could be a few things. Could be a boost leak. Could be that your engine is swallowing more air then your current turbo is pushing... Could be an exhaust least before the turbo. Could be a leak inside the cylinder somewhere.

Does you car make any unusual noises? When was the last time (modification wise) you were able to carry 1.1bar past 4000rpm?

Gary Grahn

Thanks for the reply Gary, I dont think it is the first three. i will have the turbo of soon so i can determin what if anything is wrong with it, Power has been down lately as was a funny noise at hi revs on one hi speed run.

What kind of funny noise? Sometimes those can be a little bad.. :( Are you sure its not a boost leak? A lot of times a leak will induce a whistle that is thought to be something else. I know I have missed them in the past. Try making one of these: http://people.ne.mediaone.net/bacook/ictester.htm and testing your IC system. Its from a DSM site, but its a turbo specific (as opposed to car specific) tester.

Yep that's it. Turbo dead. I was going to be rebuilding mine last weekend until I tested it. Your blades should spin quite freely. A little twirl and it should go for a bit.

The td04, if its the one from the new WRX, is going to have a hard time keeping 1.1bar past the same area. I know the new WRX's run out of boost around 5000rpm or so. Might want to look into something a little bigger. Just a tad will not increase spool, but will increase top end.

You could get the exhaust housing from the td04 and then put the compressor/center section from a 14b (td05) turbo on there (both mitsu so it should fit fairly well) and you will keep your low spool, yet almost double your cubic feet of air coming from the compressor.

Subject: RE: [BC-BFLegacyWorks] Low Boost

What kind of funny noise? Sometimes those can be a little bad.. :( Are you sure its not a boost leak? A lot of times a leak will induce a whistle that is thought to be something else. I know I have missed them in the past. Try making one of these: http://people.ne.mediaone.net/bacook/ictester.htm and testing your IC system. Its from a DSM site, but its a turbo specific (as opposed to car specific) tester.

Thanks for the reply Gary, I dont think it is the first three. i will have the turbo of soon so i can determin what if anything is wrong with it, Power has been down lately as was a funny noise at hi revs on one hi speed run.

Anyone got any ideas why my uk spec legacy will only push 1.1 bar max at 4000rpm ? had a 3inch MRt system put on not long ago so its not back pressure?

Low Boost

Actually ... Its super easy. just sounds intimidating. :) Check this out: http://vfaq.moojohn.com/proj-pics/porti ... urbos2.jpg This is what the turbine housings look like (or something like that). They are held in place by a clamp(seen here: http://vfaq.moojohn.com/proj-pics/turbo/rebuild-04.jpg ) its what the socket wrench is on. All you have to do is remove that from your td04 and then place it on a td05-14b.

If you really want to get technical now.... :) The housing size you would be using in this hybrid would be the td04 housing. This is small. This will decrease spool considerable. You will also have the benefit of using a larger compressor wheel, the 14b. This will give you more efficient (read: colder) air at the same boost pressure and be able to carry you desired pressure of 1.1bar all the way to redline. :) I think I have enough garage parts sitting around to fab one of these up if you want.

You could get the exhaust housing from the td04 and then put the compressor/center section from a 14b (td05) turbo on there (both mitsu so it should fit fairly well) and you will keep your low spool, yet almost double your cubic feet of air coming from the compressor.

the guy that had thr car on the rollers blocked off the actuator and the car still only made 1.1 bar 4000rpm, dont think the bov would have an inpact on that, i have the turbo of the car now it is a rhb52, i will have a td04 by wednesday to go on , from a 97 impreza smaller turbo so it should reduse lag,ill let you know how it gose when i get it on. it will be running 1.1 bar with apexi avc-r and unichip, see pics, by the way Gary my old turbo looks ok but im no expert on the matter but the blades on the turbo dont spin very freely
