Automatic Transmission Whining

Hi I'm having problems with my transmission. The car is a 1990
Legacy L AWD. Or at least I think it's my transmission.

It started after I changed my timing belt and water pump. Whenever I
would accelerate I would hear a hissing noise that came on at about
3000 rpm then disappeared after the transmission shifted. I thought
it was my drive belts so I tightened them a little. I suspected my
transmission because it wouldn't happen if I revved the engine in
Park.

In addition to that, the car accelerates poorly, and can hardly get
to 50 mph going uphill without a running start. Also, when I shift
to Reverse, there is a weird humming/creaking sound that comes from
the shifter.

Now after driving for a few hundred miles in this state, a whining
sound started. It's the kind of sound you get when you drive your
car in reverse, except it happens in all gears, including Park.

I've been checking the ATF, and it looks and smells normal and it's
at the correct level.

Anyone experience this before? Is my tranny doomed? Any help would
be appreciated.

Automatic Transmission Whining

Well, I've got a couple suggestions, may not be transmission related. My friend had a similar problem with his Corsica, it turned out the catalytic converter was all busted up inside and plugged up, and made the car have NO power. Which could be, because if you have a small exhaust leak once the revs get up there could be soo much back pressure it's escaping somewhere. Other thing could be head gasket, but probably not.

I just sorta doubt it is transmission because you get a hissing sound....I'm assuming the hissing is like an air hissing sound right? Other thing, why it may not do it in park, is you don't have any load on the engine.

I could be way off, and your tranny could be about ready to crap the bed. Best way I could think to check though is to drain the tranny fluid, and possibly drop the pan on it. If there is a shit load of metal shavings or worse in there, then you got a tranny problem. If there isn't, you may still have a problem with tranny, but I would tend to think it's something else.

hope that gives you some places to start, just holler if you got more questions.

Josh
