Automatic Transmission Whining
Posted: Tue Sep 04, 2001 11:06 am
Hi I'm having problems with my transmission. The car is a 1990
Legacy L AWD. Or at least I think it's my transmission.
It started after I changed my timing belt and water pump. Whenever I
would accelerate I would hear a hissing noise that came on at about
3000 rpm then disappeared after the transmission shifted. I thought
it was my drive belts so I tightened them a little. I suspected my
transmission because it wouldn't happen if I revved the engine in
Park.
In addition to that, the car accelerates poorly, and can hardly get
to 50 mph going uphill without a running start. Also, when I shift
to Reverse, there is a weird humming/creaking sound that comes from
the shifter.
Now after driving for a few hundred miles in this state, a whining
sound started. It's the kind of sound you get when you drive your
car in reverse, except it happens in all gears, including Park.
I've been checking the ATF, and it looks and smells normal and it's
at the correct level.
Anyone experience this before? Is my tranny doomed? Any help would
be appreciated.
